Jim Hall
James Martin (Jim) Hall was born 15 November, 1861, near Wheeling, West
Virginia, son of James Strange Hall, a Methodist preacher. Florence Geuletta
Stone was born 3 December, 1863, in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. They were
married 12 August, 1891, in Rice County, Kansas, and lived on a farm where
their sons Harold, Daniel, and James Martin, Jr. were born. The family moved
to a farm near Nashville, Kansas, in 1901. Their fourth son, Floyd, was born
in 1904. When they moved to their farm 1 1/2 miles west of Medicine Lodge,
Harold was 10, Dan was 7, Martin was 4, and Floyd an infant. In addition to
farming, the Halls raised fine horses and showed them at county fairs.
The Hall boys attended the Medicine Lodge schools, going in a horse
drawn cart or on horseback. They took part in school athletics, and the
whole family was active in the cultural and social live of the community.
Webster's Unabridged Dictionary was a much used book in the household,
especially when Florence and her charming English neighbor, Miss Mary Best,
had lively discussions about the uses of words. Florence was an enthusiastic
member of the Monday Afternoon Club.
The Presbyterian Church played an important role in the lives of the Hall
family. Jim was an elder and Florence a Sunday School teacher; both were
excellent Bible students. The boys sang in the choir, with Martin as soloist.
There were many church and school picnics and hayrack rides at the Hall farm.
On 9 June, 1911, Harold and Glenn Lindley went swimming in Glenn's uncle
Ben Wadworth's farm lake. Harold drowned - at the age of 17. On 16 June 1920,
Dan died of cancer of the spleen - at the age of 22.
Martin Hall graduated from Kansas University in 1925 as a Civil Engineer.
14 November, 1927 he married Alice DeWitt, daughter of Alice Atwood Whitehead
and Mathew Pleasant DeWitt. Martin and Alice have a daughter Mary Alice, who
is Assistant Director of Prince George's County Memorial Library System in
Hyattsville, Maryland, and a son, James Martin, III, who is head of the
Mechanical Department of Wilson and Company, Engineers and Architects, Salina,
Kansas.
Floyd Hall joined his father in farming and stock raising. On 8 September
1935, he married Louise Painter, daughter of Callie Minnick and Charles Painter.
They have a son, Charles Royce Hall, who is a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine,
in Fremont, Nebraska, and a daughter, Marilyn Lee Brooks, in Marietta,
Georgia.
On 19 December, 1951, Floyd died at the age of 47.
Jim Hall had been a school teacher-farmer in Rice County but gave his
full attention to farming and stock raising in Barber County. He died 4
March, 1936, age 75.
On Florence Hall's 80th birthday she announced that she had always wanted
to make a quilt but have never had time! She was a perfectionist and the two
quilts she made are treasures. She died 11 May, 1949, at the age of 85.
