Chester Hankey
Chester and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Hankey with their three daughters moved to
Medicine Lodge from a farm in Sumner County, Kansas, in April, 1927.
The move was prompted by long time friends, John and Ruth Bruch, who had
moved there earlier and found a promising job as a section hand on the
railroad. Farming wasn't all that great; so with a promise of work on the
railroad, Chester and Lizzie sold out in the spring and headed west. Loading
their belongings i a trailer pulled by a Model T Ford, the family was on the
way to a new home.
It was a great trip - their first time away from Eastern Kansas - until
they reached the curves over by Sharon. They'd never seen any hills nor
anything but a straight road around a square section of land. Dad didn't
take the curves properly, overturned the trailer, and scattered a crate of
laying chickens. They never laid eyes on their pet cat again, and one mashed
canary cage held another dead pet. What a sorrowful group limped into Medicine
Lodge to live at 400 South Walnut! Living in town was so new that they soon
forgot the tragedy of lost pets; besides, Dad soon acquired replacements.
The next big event was when Elm Creek flooded soon after they arrived in
town. They'd never seen so much water before, let alone a flood! The many
wonders of city life in the west continued especially when the two older girls
started to school in the fall, a city school yet, not a one room country
school. Elizabeth was in high school and Vivian in second grade; Thelma, the
youngest, was to start school the following year.
Sometime in 1928, Dad went to work at the Gypsum Mill; he worked there
until July, 1929, when an accident at work injured him and left him crippled
for life.
The family made many trips to the Gyp Hills west of twon. They had never
known anything but flat farming land; so every Sunday for many months, they
enjoyed excursions around Sun City and on the Medicine River.
In 1931 another daughter, Hester Marie, was born. Sometime in 1932 the
Hankey family sold their home on South Walnut to move to Argonia, where Dad
bought a shoe shop - to have a sit down job because of his crippled leg.
During their stay in Argonia, daughter Margaret Ann was added to the family.
Elizabeth, the oldest daughter, married Oliver Singer in 1929 and lived on
a farm northeast of Medicine Lodge for 31 years. Vivian and Thelma both
finished their schooling in Argoinia and married boys with whom they had
attended school there - Vivian to Clifford Delling; Thelma to Jay McClure, Jr.
The parents then moved to Kiowa, staying there for several years, owning
first a laundry, then a produce business. They retired and moved to Wichita
in 1954. Hester and Margaret graduated from high school in Kiowa and married
Kiowa boys - Hester to Harold McWilliams and Margaret to Gerry Beason.
Chester and Lizzie lived out their remaining years in Wichita. Dad passed
away in April 1975 and Mother in April 1976.
