Such a grain marketing organization as Farmer's Cooperatives and their
elevators are a familiar sight in Barber County now. This was first suggested
by my grandfather, Robert Irvin Hanna, while he was president of Perryton,
Texas, Equity Exchange, living there with his wife, Medra Ola, and three sons,
Houston, Ormondo, and (my father) Harold, according to the "Farmers's
Cooperative:, May, 1978, U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. As my other grandfather,
Dave Combrink, was also a farmer, he was a charter member of the Hazelton
Coop. Association and first secretary for many years. My uncle, David O.
Combrink, has been president of it for 13 years and of course, I have one
stock in it.
I was born at Anthony, Kansas. My parents, Harold and Betty Combrink Hanna,
were living on our farm near Corwin, Kansas. My father died in a farm accident
when I was six, and we (my sister, Nancy, Mother, and I) lived then with my
grandfather Hanna until he died at age ninety years. The Hanna plot in Hazelton
Cemetery is where they are interred.
We moved to Barber county after this, and I attended Hazelton grade school.
I graduated from Pawnee Rock High School and the University of Wichita with a
music major. I took training as a Braniff Flight Attendant at Dallas and have
been in this line of work ever since. I flew Military Air Transport Command
while living in San Francisco. This included flying into the Philippines,
Guam, Wake, Tokoyo, Japan, and Viet Nam during the war yars. I am now based
in Houston, Texas. My moter and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Clair W. Rucker, are
retired teachers and live in Hazelton.
