Albert Harbaugh


     Albert Harold Harbaugh, son of Uly and Mabel (Hensley) Harbaugh, was born
  in 1925 at Gerlane, Kansas. He attended school at Gerlane and Glenco Rural
  Schools. While attending high school at Medicine Lodge, he participated in
  sports and FFA. After graduation in 1943, he entered the U.S. Navy and served
  his country until he was discharged in 1946. He returned to the farm where
  they now live, raising Angus cattle with the "Fishhook Brand" and farming.
     He has two sisters, Mrs. Betty (Bill) Garten, Medicine Lodge; Mrs. Mollie
  (Robert) Watts, Hardtner; two brothers, Jake, Sharon; Jime, Lake City; two
  half-sisters, Mrs. Faye (Lester) Gilmore and Mrs. Ruth (Luke) Chapin, both
  of Medicine Lodge.
     September 9, 1948, Albert married Helen June Tidwell, daughter of Helen 
  Mae (Shafer) Tidwell, Kowa, Kansas. Helen had five brothers, Lonnie, Dewey,
  Lloyd, Jack, and Bill. They lived on the Blackstock farm 5 miles west of
  Kiowa until the fall of 1942. After their father passed away, they moved to
  Kiowa. While Helen was in high school she was a member of the band, Pep Club,
  Y-Teens, other activities, and still had time to work several downtown
  businesses. She graduated in 1945. She enjoyed working at Mabel's Cafe,
  Turner Dry-Goods Store, LoVette's Drug Store, and after graduation at the
  Kiowa News. In 1946 she attended Venus Beauty Academy in Wichita, graduating
  April 1947. She returned to Kiowa and worked as a hairdresser until November
  1948.
     Helen has a shop in their home in the country and enjoys her work as one
  of her hobbies.
     They have three children, Paul, Marsha, and Kent. Paul graduated from 
  Kiowa High School in 1967. While in high school, he was active in all sports,
  vocal music, and FFA. AFter graduation, he attended Ft. Hays State College,
  graduating in the spring of 1971 with a BS degree in agriculture. Marsha
  graduated from Kiowa in 1970, and enjoyed band, vocal music, Y-Teens, and a
  member of the Dance Band. She attended Ft. Hays State College and graduated
  1974 with a BS degree in elementary education; then she received her Masters
  Degree in 1976 from Fort Hays State College. Kent graduated from South Barber,
  Kiowa, Kansas, in 1975. Kent was active in FFA, sports, band, and in 1975
  received the State Farmers Degree. He placed first in the state in the half-
  mile in Class 1-A track in 1975. He also attends Fort Hays State College and
  enjoys farming, raising cattle; and in his spare time he likes to practice
  roping.
     All three children enjoyed the Barber County 4-H Club and received many
  honors during their 4-H years.
     Paul married Yvonne Inslee, daugther of Charles and Josephine (Hrencher)
  Inslee, Sharon, Kansas, July 21, 1973. They have one daughter, Janell. They
  live on their farm northwest of Kiowa, Kansas, where Mrs. T.E. (Alice)
  Humphrey lived for many years.
     Marsha married Sidney Stranathan, son of J.H. "Bud" (deceased) and Ruth
  (Wolgamott), June 10, 1978. They live at Olathe, Kansas. Marsha teaches
  kindergarten at Edgeton, Kansas. Sidney graduated May, 1979 from Kansas State
  College of Osteopathic Medicine.
     Albert served 18 years on the Barber County Rural School Board at Kiowa,
  retiring in 1977. He also serves on the Barber County Rural Fire Department.
