Debra Harbaugh-Black
Debra Kay Harbaugh, 2nd daughter of Jim and Beulah Harbaugh, was born
July 18, 1953, at Medicine Lodge, delivered by Dr. John G. Hoffer. I was
raised 25 miles southwest of Medicine Lodge on a farm and ranch. In 1959
I started to Julian school with Miss Byers as my teacher. The 4 years I
was there I had Mrs. Woodard, Mrs. White, and Mrs. Hunter was a music
teacher that came to the area schools. Our school was closed in 1963, as
were many of the country schools. We then rode the bus to Hardtner. Anne
Grice was my best friend and still is. In 1968-69 school year I was crowned
school carnival queen. In 1971 I graduated from Hardtner School.
I was a member of the Kiowa Chapter Rainbow Girls #59. I was very honored
to be a Grand Representative for our Chapter in 1972. It meant a lot to me
because my dad was a Mason and my mom was a Rainbow Girl.
When I wasn't going to school or other activities, I enjoyed riding
horses. I went on many roundups in Barber County, Z Bar Ranch, Uncle Roger
Mills', Grandpa Govan Mills', Uncle Culp Elseas', Jim Brasses, and some I
don't remember the names. The ones I remember the best of all were our own.
Everyone always helped, mom, dad, Brenda, Shirley, and Casey. It wasn't
just cattle work, we all drove tractors, trucks or anything else there was
to be done. I learned to drive a tractor when I was 8. We also farmed around
Gerlane and the Stone place, south of Lake City.
In 1971 I moved to Pratt to attend PCJC for one year. Then I worked in a
pharmacy. Many people from Barber County shopped there. It was nice to see
people from home. It was there I met my first husband, Terry Walker. We had
a son, Spencer James, Aug 8, 1975. In 1976 we were divorced.
The summer of 1976, I met William (Bill) K. Black. We were married December
30, 1976. Bill was born in Leaf, Miss., July 6, 1946, the son of John and
Anbne Black. Bill has a son, Kenneth, born Oct. 17, 1966, in Starksville,
Miss. Jan 9, 1978, our son, Calvin Eugene, was born.
Bill managed Central States Gas Co. for 3 1/2 years. I am sure many people
in Barber Co. know him. Central States pipeline have been laid across many
farms and ranches in Barber County. Bill also had several guys from Barber
County working for him. Bill is now a Gas and Oil Consultant, and we own
Santa Fe Stables in Pratt.
Bill, myself, and our three sons enjoy riding horses, baseball, wrestling,
hunting, and fishing. We also like very much visiting our parents. We try to
make it to Mississippi at least once a year and to Barber County a lot.
(THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME).
