Jake Harbaugh

Jacob (Jake) George Harbaugh, son of Uly and Mabel (Hensley) Harbaugh
was born August 5, 1932, at home south of Gerlane, Kansas. At age 4, he
broke his leg falling on the icy ground and a few years later had to be
rushed to Wichita for an emergency appendectomy. He attended school at
Gerlane and helped his family with farming of several acres and raising
horses and cattle. He had two brothers, Albert and Jim; two sisters, Mrs.
Betty Garten and Mollie Wats; two half-sisters, Mrs. Faye Gilmore and
  Mrs. Ruth Chapin.
Jake attended high school at Medicine Lodge and was fortunate to be
on the Varsity Basketball team. The team played in the State Tournament
and was broadcast on the radio, so the ones who couldn't hear it on
their radio were invited to sit in the auditorium to listen, even the
parents who were unable to attend the game at Hutchinson. He drove back
and forth to high school, the same as his brothers and sisters had done
in previous years. He graduated in 1950.
On November 8, 1951, Jake married Barbara Jean (Taylor), born April
24, 1934, at Thomas, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Oscar and Laura
(Corn) Taylor. She had three sisters: Mrs. Gloria (Gary A.) Myers, Mrs.
Joan (Stanley T.) Myers, Mrs. Myra Sue (Jeff) Gates, and a brother,
  Jerry.
Barbara graduated from Medicine Lodge High School in 1952. Jake was
drafted in 1953, serving 2 years in the Korean War. After returning
home, they were living at Gerlane in 1956, when they were attending a
wedding and upon returning home, their house was burning, losing all
  precious belongings.
They have lived since May, 1957, east and south of Sharon, Kansas,
where they farm, raise cattle - with a "Fishhook Brand." They have a
garden each year. Jake drives back and forth to the National Gypsum
Mine, Sun City, Kansas, to work. Barbara is secretary for the Mental
Health Institute in the courthouse at Medicine Lodge.
Kathy is living at The Winfield State Hospital. She is happy there,
but enjoys frequent visits at home. Scott and Teresa attended all their
school years and graduated from Sharon High School. Scott was a member
of the 1977 State Champion 8-Man Football Team. Teresa married Dick
Driskill August 5, 1978, after attending Hutchinson Community Junior
College and working in Medicine Lodge. They live at Augusta, Kansas,
and both drive to Wichita to work. Scott is employed with the Barber
  County Maintenance Department.
Jake and Barbara enjoy taking their family fishing and camping when
  they have an opportunity.
