James Harbaugh
Just under 4 years of age, I remember sitting by the hour on grandpa
Mills' lap and going thru the pages of Sears Roebuck catalog for pastime.
I was born to Govan and Margaret Mills on October 11, 1931, at LaCrosse,
Kansas, and named after my mother, Margaret, and Aunt Beulah Elsea. I have
one brother, Clifton, and one sister, Hannah.
Father was teaching winters, and spending summers on the Mills ranch
near Lake City. In 1934 father's teaching took us to Larned 'till 1936;
we moved to the Mills ranch to make our home. That September I started
school at Dist. #6 with Ruth McCracken as my teacher. Being the only
student, the school board closed the school after the first week. I then
went to Lake City grades one through eight and attended high school at
Medicine Lodge, graduating in 1949.
My husband, James Cavin Harbaugh, 2nd son of Ulrich and Mabel, was
born i the home near Gerlane December 30, 1928. He has two brothers, Jake
and Albert, and two sisters, Molly and Betty. Jim attended grades 1 thru 8
at Gerlane, riding horseback or walking the 2 miles. Some of the teachers
he remembers were Freda and Bertie Nurse, Polly Gaddis, and Esther Phillips.
He attended high school at Medicine Lodge, graduating in 1946.
December 5, 1949, we were married in the Old Methodist Church by Rev.
Taylor. We lived on the Leonard Ott ranch 25 miles southwest of Medicine
Lodge. Jim's father bought the ranch in 1942. In 1960 we built a modern
home on the ranch and are living there at present, raising Angus and
Charolais cattle. We bought the W.R. Stone ranch in 1969. Our farming and
ranching has been family operated with the children learning the trade as
soon as they could set a horse or guide a vehicle.
In the 30 years of our marriage, we had six children. In 1951 our twins
were born, a boy and a girl; being premature, they did not survive. We have
three girls: Brenda Nygaard, Debra Black, and Shirley Shelite. Their stories
are in other parts of the book. One son, Casey Jim, was born August 25, 1959,
at Medicine Lodge, attended grade school at Hardtner, and high school at
Medicine Lodge, graduating in 1977. The following September, Casey joined
the Marine Corps, taking his boot camp at San Diego, California, and was
stationed in Camp LeJeune, North Carolina, for 14 months. Then he was sent
to Okinawa to finish his term.
In 1967 the Barber County Cattle Tour came to our place, and we showed
our cattle.
Jim always rode with the cowboys in the Peace Treaty Pageant; when Casey
got old enough, he also rode with them. Really, the whole family liked to
participate. Snipper, our horse, is a favorite of our kids; they all learned
to ride on him. Another favorite is Ginger, bought from Roy Platt, and if
she would buck a little, it would make Debra happy as she always liked to
ride a horse with spunk!
