Julia Harbaugh
Julia Harbaugh, daughter of Jacob Benjamin (Ben) Harbaugh, was born
1897 at home, 8 miles south of Medicine Lodge. Her dad came from Washington
County, Iowa, when he was 19 years old to join two of his brothers. His

lived in a dugout until moving into a new home, which burned in the '20's.
They built another new home that later belonged to John, a brother, where
his son, Pat, now lives. Her father would tell about the time some men came
by on horseback on a Wednesday, April 30, 1884, and stopped because it was
raining, Brush Creek was up; her Aunt Mollie gave them breakfast before they
could ride on to Medicine Lodge. Ben was suspicious, so went to town the
next day and found they had robbed the Medicine Valley Bank, two men were
killed; men of the town took out after them and caught them in a box canyon
southwest of town. They surrendered, were put in jail, tried to break out,
one was shot, other three surrendered. The town people made a decision to
hand them, so they did.

State Bank, 1928-1932, and later was deputy sheriff for one year., then
undersheriff 1936-1938. While he was sheriff, he would tell of the exciting
time when the Isabel Bank was robbed of $600 and travelers checks. They
caught the robbers in a silo on George McGuire's farm, all but 10 cents was
recovered.
