Pete (Pat) Harbaugh
Pete Harold (Pat) Harbaugh was born March 17, 1921, to John and Mayme
Harbaugh at the Ranch, ten miles south of Medicine Lodge. Pat was the
nickname given him by his doting grandfather, Ben Harbaugh, who said
"You can call him anything you like, but he'll always be 'Old St. Pat'
to me."
Pat was the 4th generation reared on the old home place, growing up
on the farm with two older sisters, Pauline McClary and Louise Kirkbride.
This was a great beginning of a wonderful life. Pat has devoted his entire
life to the family farm.
He attended grades 1-8 at Sunflower District 34, graduated from Medicine
Lodge High School in 1938. While attending high school, Pat received the
State Farmers degree in Agriculture. Pat was always interested in farming
and ranching, so continued to operate the family farm which he loved.
August 8, 1943, Pat married Vivian, the daughter of Kay and Gertrude
Holder, NOrwich, Kansas. They established residence at BarV Ranch, where
they still reside.
September 16, 1948, Pat and Vivian were blessed with a baby girl, Cheri
Lee. She spent 18 years at the Ranch.
After graduating from college, Cheri Lee spent several months vacationing
in Hawaii. There she married Robert Charles Keefer from Gettysburg, PA, in
1972. They presently live in Honolulu, Hawaii (The Pacific Paridise). She
teaches in the Hawaii All Girls School at La Pietra; he works for Blythe,
Eastman, and Dillon.
A few of Pat's hobbies are hunting, fishing, and trapshooting. He won the
Junior Kansas State Championship at the age of 10 years. He was runner-up
champion at Kansas State Shoot and numerous tropies for other events.
Pat and his father went to the National Trapshooting Tournament at Vandalia,
Ohio, and won first place in the father-son team. The preceding year they
won second place, and the year preceding, Third place. Pat has continued
shooting through the years and ocasionally still breaks 100 x 100 rocks.
Pat recalls his grandfather telling about three men riding in on horse
back April 30, 1884, asking if they could eat brakfast with them. Living
approximately half way between Kiowa and Medicine Lodge, this wasn't unusual
for people to eat with the Harbaughs. Sometime later, much to his surprise,
Grandpa Harbaugh learned he had fed the bank robbers who rode on to Medicine
Lodge and robbed the bank, killing George Geppert and Wiley Payne.
The Harbaugh name is not one of extreme significance, but it is one that
goes back many years. Most of the forefathrs were farmers and enjoyed
ranching in Barber County. We feel fortunate to share this land of enchantment,
truly God's masterpiece of beauty. It is a pleasure and a privilege to live and
serve in this community. Pat likes the country, the wonderful people, and
friendly neighbors. It's a good place to rear children 'weather the storm of
life,' and to enjoy the blessings of God and the United States of America.
Pat and Vivian have lived here 36 years - we think Medicine Lodge is the
GREATEST place in the world, and hope to keep it so.
