Ulrich (Uly) Harbaugh
Ulrich (Uly) Harbaugh, son of Jacob Benjamin (Ben) and Mary (Gronemiar)
Harbaugh, was born 1892 at home, 8 miles south of Medicine Lodge. His dad
came from Iowa in 1881 and lived in a dugout till they built a home. Uly's
mother came from Kentucky. He had three brothers and two sisters: Eli
(deceased), John, Julia, Arthur (Short), and Bessie (Mrs. Jibo) Hewitt.
They attended Roundup School, 1 mile west of Gerlane. His folks farmed,
raised cattle, horses, mules, hogs, and chickens.
In 1912 Uly married Mary (Page), daughter of Charles and Nancy Page, and
lived west of Gerlane. They had two daughters, Faye (Mrs. Lester) Gilmore
and Ruth (Mrs. Luke) Chapin. In 1918 a large snowstorm covered canyons
and cattle. People were weeks digging out. Mary took ill and passed away
in February, 1919. Later Uly moved to his farm south of Gerlane.
In 1921 Uly married Mabel Angeline Hensley, daughter of Bruce and Liza
Jane (Newton) Hensley. The Hensleys came to Kansas in 1910 in a covered
wagon from Missouri. Mabel was born 1899 in Wright County, Missouri. She
had three sisters and two brothers: Elma (Mrs. Len) Groendycke, Arvel,
Oral, Lura (Mrs. Bud) Rickard, and Troye (Mrs. Lester) Rose. They attended
school at Roundup. The Hensleys had a boarding house in Gerlane. Mabel worked
at the Railroad Depot during WWI.
In March, 1922, Faye and Ruth, moved to Medicine Lodge to live with Uly's
parents.
Uly and Mabel farmed, raised cattle, hogs, horses, mules, and had a stallion
and jack for breeding purposes. They raised a garden. They butchered hogs,
cattle, chickens, turkeys, and wild game for meat. They made lard to cook
with and soap to wash clothes. Sadirons were heated to press clothes. They
heated homes and cooked with wood stoves. They milked cows, churned butter,
sold cream and eggs. There were dirt storms which were hard on the crops
and animals. They had a bad blizzard in 1931. The women would have all day
meetings to make bedding by quilting or making comforts. They took covered
dishes, and the children played.
Uly and Mabel had five children born at home: Albert, Betty (Mrs. Bill)
Garten, Jim, Mollie (Mrs. Robert) Watts, and Jake, who attended the new
Gerlane School.
They raised black Angus cattle with a "Fishhook brand". In 1949 they moved
to Medicine Lodge. Uly drove back and forth to the farm for several years,
helping with the work.
In their retirement years, they enjoyed fishing and visiting with their
brothers, sisters, and friends. They enjoyed a good 'pitch' game and big
dinners with their family and friends. They are fortunate and pleased to
have all sons, wives, daughters, and husbands still living in Barber County.
Most of the grandchildren and great grandchildren live in other parts of the
state. Uly and members of his family have enjoyed participating in the Peace
Treaty Pageant for several years.
