Green Harris

Our parents were old timers in Barber County. Our father, known as G.R.
or Green Harris, was born at Independence, Missouri, on January 24, 1854.
The son of Alexander R. Harris and Eliza Harris, he first came to Barber
County in 1883 for a short time. In 1884 he returned to make his home
   here.
Our mother, Sarah D. Weidner, was born January 4, 1867, at Salina,
Kansas, the daughter of William Hillory Weidner and Sarah Jane Weidner.
The family moved to Wichita and lived there for some time. Our mother
was twelve years old when the family moved to Medicine Lodge to make
their home. They were living in Medicine Lodge at the time of the flood,
and their house was swept from its foundation by the water and lodged
   between trees.
Our parents were married in 1889 by Reverend Cain, and with the exception
of a few years living in Medicine Lodge and ElReno, Oklahoma, most of their
lives were spent on a farm southeast of town. Two children passed away when
quite small. On the farm they raised nine children: Lee, Roy, Edith, Ruth,
Rachel, Florence, Grace, George, and Wallace. Lee, Roy, Edith and Ruth
passed away in later years, Rachel in 1979. During the years of growing up,
all children attended College Hill School and some attended Medicine Lodge
high school. Two taught in Barber County for several years. We attended
Sunday School and church at Central View.
On the farm the usual crops were raised. Cattle, hogs, chickens, and a
few turkeys were also raised, along with several kinds of fruit trees and
   garden.
Our mother was a good seamstress and made all of the girls' clothes and
her own. She also taught the girls to sew.
We had a good life and a happy time in growing up. There were school and
church programs during the year along with neighborhood parties.
Our father liked to hunt in his younger days. We have a picture of a
hunting trip taken in the early eighties. The picture was taken either along
the Medicine River or in Woods County along the Salt Fork River. In the
picture were deer, wild turkey, and other fowl. The four men in the picture
are Bob and Charlie Talliaferro and G.R. and Alex Harris.
Our homeplace was sold after our parents' deaths. The house is still lived
in, but all the outher buildings are gone. Several of the grandchildren and
   great-grandchildren live in Barber County.
