Wanda Brown Harris
I, Wanda (Brown) Harris, was born between Medicine Lodge and Sharon to
Gaines and Florence Brown in 1928. I was the fifth of six children. While
I was still a small child, we moved to Medicine Lodge, where we lived
until 1941.
As a small child, one of the most memorable times for me was while in
the second grade, we had a bad dust storm. The teacher, Miss Miller, had
us tie wet hankies over our faces to kep out some of the dust. Then she
took us all to our homes, so we wouldn't get lost. Another time, there
was a hard rain up at Elm Mills, and a six foot wall of water came down
Elm Creek. It took a two-span bridge by our house. Such a huge amount of
water, I had never seen. I remember, also, the long hours of practice for
the Indian Peace Treaty Pageant, when I was in the second and seventh
grades. Then the exciting days when all the Indians came to take part.
Most of all the Pageant itself. We have attended four pageants since. We
took our youngest son to the last one, and he thought it was really some
thing. He also enjoyed the Stockade Museum.
On Easter Sunday in 1940 I was baptized in the First Christian Church
by the Rev. J.I. Brimberry. Also baptized that day were the twins, Ruth
and Robert Brimberry.
After I finished the seventh grade in 1941, we moved to Luray, Kansas
for three months, then to Marquette, Kans. I finished my education with
my graduation from Marquette High School. In June of 1946, I married
George C. Harris. We had seven children. They are Yolanda, who is married
to Max Buffinton; they have three children; Georgia, Marica, and Harris
live in Marquette. Marketta and her husband, David Ray, live in Newburg,
Mo.; their children are David Paul, and Michella. Clifton and Amber, his
wife, and son Chance Reo, live in Belton, Mo.; Richard and Becky, his
wife, and daughter, Melissa, live in Tonganoxie, Kans.; Gaines lives in
San Luis Obispo, Calif.; Theresa and husband, Larry Rohrer, and two
children, Denny and Genia, live in Spring Hill, Kans. Greg is a freshman
in the Louisburg High School.
We have moved 42 times in our married life. In Sept. 1951, we lived in
Medicine Lodge, where my husband, who is a bulldozer operator, helped
build a new highway. He was working for M.W. Watson at the time. We lived
in the Emory Miller apartmetn, just south of the Carrie Nation home.
George is now in his 21st year with Reno Construction Co.
We still visit Medicine Lodge, as George has an uncle and aunt, Paul and
Helen Williams, and two cousins, Betty and Shirley, living there. We also
visit friends, Jim and June Jost, who live in Attica. June and I graduated
from high school together.
Daddy died in August of 1969. Mother now lives in the Riverview Estates
in Marquette, where we visit her as often as possible.
