S.A. Harrison

The life story of Samuel Abraham Harrison has been documented and
published. It was the first in a series in the Barber County Index
of the Medicine Lodge area "Old Timers."
By the time Abe Harrison arrived in Medicine Lodge in 1917, he had
already been through three professions covering sixteen years. Graduating
from Normal school, he taught school for four years. With immense pride
he received his Doctor Juris degree and practiced law in Kansas City,
     Missouri, for two years.
When his doctor brothers purchased a drug store, Abe became a pharmacist
and worked there for 10 years.
In Medicine Lodge he established a real estate business; from this he
branched into insurance. He served his county as Clerk from 1925-1939.
On March 30, 1920, he was united in marriage to Helen Josephine Gibson,
the youngest of three daughters (Gladys Gibson, born 1892; Fern Gibson
Shell, born 1895) was born January 5, 1898, to J.P. Gibson and Phoebe
     Rogers Gibson.
Helen and Abe's only son, John, was born February 5, 1921, and was
killed May 29, 1943, at El Reno, Oklahoma, while serving as a civilian
pilot instructor for the Army Air Corps.
A few years ago Helen suffered a stroke and is now residing at the
Kenwood View Home in Salina, Kansas. She is a lover of music and a very
talented pianist. She taught piano to many young people in Medicine Lodge,
was very active in the Methodist Church, where she was pianist and
organist many years. She was also an active member of Monday Afternoon
     Club.
Able's and Helen's contributions to life and times of Medicine Lodge
were significant and impressive. Their home was always open in time of
need to both relatives and friends. They helped many young people to get
an education, both financially and with encouragement. Abe and Helen
established a scholarship fund at Southwestern College, Winfield, Kansas.
Abe was one of those founding the Barber County Building and Loan and
was later president. He was president of the Board of Trustees of the
Methodist Church of Medicine Lodge and an active member of both the
Champer of Commerce and Lions Club.
