Harry Harley Hart
Harry Harley Hart and his wife, the former Marguerite Gladys Knox, were
married March 19, 1924, and started farming in Barber County, northwest
of Kiowa, Kansas. To this union two daughters were born: Naomi Lee and
Leona Marguerite. Back in those days, the country doctor delivered the
babies at home. Dr. Hammer delivered both of our girls at home.
Naomi and Leona started school at "Old Kiowa District 112." We lived
here until 1936 at which time we moved to a farm near Hardtner, Kansas.
The girls continued their schooling and graduated from Hardtner High
School.
We continued farming in Barber County until 1963 when we retired. We
remember many good years and many lean years. During the Depression years
and the dust bowl back in the thirties, we were proud to wear patched
clothes. It showed we worked hard, lived on and loved the farm. We also
took some vacations with our family, visiting our National Parks and
mountains.
Our oldest daughter, Naomi, took a business course and is presently
employed as supervisor for the insurance department at the Wichita
Osteopathic Hospital. She married Jimmy Ives and has one son, Sammy,
and one daughter, Linda. Her son served four years in the U.S. Navy
and is now living in Salina, Kansas. He is marrid and has two sons,
Jason and John.
Her daughter lives in Wichita. She graduated from high school and
attended college for two years. She works for a realtor in Wichita.
Our daughter, Leona, attended two years at Southwestern College. She
then married Jack Schubert. They lived in Burlington, Oklahoma, where
Leona was active in community and church work until her death in 1976.
Jack and Leona had one son, David Wesley, and two daughters, Jennifer
Lynn and Yvonne Michael. Wesley graduated from Oklahoma University in
1976. He is a CPA. He and his wife, Back, live in Oklahoma City with
their two girls, Amy and Amber.
Jennifer is a 1979 graduate of Oklahoma University. Her mother started
her in music at the young age of five years. She has been a piano student
of Celia Bryant, professor of piano at Oklahoma University. Among other
college honors she received "Outstanding Senior i the College of Fine Arts -
Bachelor of Music." She was two times winer of the Fred Holmes Memorial
Piano Award and University Scholar of Who's Who among students in American
Universities and Colleges.
Yvonne graduated from Burlington High School in 1979. She was active in
all school activities. She was cheerleader, Miss Burlingotn, contestant
in Miss Ideal contest, and runner-up as basketball queen at Tonkawa. She
will attend Oklahoma University in the fall.
In 1969 we moved from Barber County after having lived there for 45 years.
Harry's failing health prompted us to purchase a home in Burlington, Oklahoma,
to be nearer our daughter. My husband passed away in April, 1970.
During the years since Harry's death, I have continued to live in Oklahoma.
I have joined with the Burlington Christian Church and made many friends
there. I was born in Oklahoma and will live my remaining years here, but 45
years of memories will make Barber County dear to me.
