Ray F. Henry
Ray F. Henry came to Medicine Lodge in 1946, employed by the Medicine
Lodge high school, to teach and assist the football coach. He was born
in Oklahoma, near Kiowa, on a farm which was homesteaded by his grand-
father Henry. Ray attended school in Kiowa, then Southwestern College
at Winfield, and received his degree in 1939. Following his graduation,
he assisted the football coach at Southwestern College for two years.
During World War II, he was employed by Cessna Aircraft in Wichita, then
served three years in the Navy and was stationed in New Orleans.
Ray's parents were Mary E. and John Frank Henry who were living in
Oklahoma at the time of his birth, but lived most of their lives in Kiowa.
The family consisted of W.E. Henry, Arthur C. Henry (now deceased), and
Ray.
In 1948 Ray was married to Faribe Warren of Medicine, and their daughters
are Hannah and Cora. Hannah attended school in Medicine Lodge, was graduated
from Fort Hays State University in 1977, and married William K. Watson, Jr.,
Hays, Kansas, where they reside. Cora also attended school in Medicine Lodge,
then was graduated from Emporia State University in 1979 and is now a medical
technology student at Topeka.
Ray retired from teaching at Medicine Lodge High School after thirty years.
During his teaching career, he served as football coach, and for many years,
a gymnastic coach, during which time many boys were able to receive statewide
achievement, either in addition to the major sports or entirely as a gymnast.
Ray also taught driver training and physical education, as well as serving as
the athletic director at the time of his retirement. He received the honor of
having been elected into the Kansas State High School Activities Association
Hall of Fame.
Faribe Henry was born and reared in Barber County and attended school in
Medicine Lodge, New Mexico State University, and Wichita University, after
which she taught school for a few years. At present she is employed by the
school district as secretary at the Intermediate school.
The Ray Henry family enjoy their home in Medicine Lodge and have been active
in various organizations in addition to many activities during the years of
association with the schools. They are all members of the Christian Church.
Ray and his brothers have been partners in the operation of their farm. The
land is in the third generation Henry family.
Following Ray's retirement from teaching, he has been associated with his
brother, W.E. Henry, in the Frazier-Henry Insurance Agency in Kiowa.
