Beatrice Carter Hicks

In April, 1942, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur (Pete) Carter and sons, Orville and
Howard Carter, moved to Medicine Lodge, Kansas, from Great Bend, Kansas. It
was the end of World War II, with its gasoline, tires, and sugar rationing.
During the war, I had written to 3 brothers, 2 brothers-in-law, 3 cousins
  and 3 friends.
My boys, Orville and Howard, attended grade school in the old grade
school building on the corner of 2nd and Walnut. The memorial bell sits on
  the school site.
I worked for Mr. Thomas Carter, my father-in-law, after coming to Medicine
Lodge. He had a garden where we set out potato and tomato plants, did hoeing
and cross tilling of the garen. It was south of the railroad and just east
of 281 highway. Mr. Carter and I often talked of him first moving to Medicine
Lodge. He saie he came with a dime and great determination.
In July, 1949, John Arthur Carter, Jr. was born to our family. In December
of 1949, my marriage with Arthur Carter ended after 18 years. I moved in with
some great friends of mine, Mr. and Mrs. Bob King. While there I was introduced
to Mr. Albert Hicks, a farmer from Little Rock, Arkansas. We were married June
16, 1950, at the home of Jim and Venita Jenkins, Ashland, Kansas.
In January , 1952, we bought a home at 414 East Washington where we lived
15 years. In September, 1954, John Carter started primary school on Walnut
Street. Our children, Albert, Mary, and Anna were born at Medicine Lodge
  Memorial Hospital.
John, Albert, Mary, and Anna finished school in Medicine Lodge. John is a
professional truck driver; Albert went to Pratt and Hutchinson Junior Colleges
and later to Wichita State University. Mary attended Barton County Community
College, and Anna attended Hutchinson Community College.
Mr. Hicks worked in the cement plant at National Gypsum under Guy Williams.
Later he was promoted to board plant under Ernie Melkus. He worked with Ager
Caldwell, Nathaniel Washington, Pete Magnison, Dick Gibson, Leonard McVey, and
Jack Monger. In 1953 Mr. Hicks became heat of Sanitation Dept of Medicine Lodge
and commercialized in cattle, hogs, chickens, and rabbits. He baled paper which
I hauled on International trucks to Bob Spriggs Paper Mill in Hutchinson, Kansas.
In 1965 we bought our present home. I began working at Medicine Valley Lodge-
Penock Nursing Home where I worked under Darlene Swonger as nurse's aide and
cook and now in food service for 14-15 years. I also have worked at Masters'
  Cafe and Indian Grill.
During this time, I took couses in adult education such as Home Ec. under
Cathy Gee. Later I took bookkeeping, accounting, and typing under direction of
Oral Hensley to assist my husband in Sanitation Dept.
Mr. Hicks is deceased December 25, 1965. I continued the business several
years. I'm continuing my education at Pratt Juco. I am a member of First
Baptist Church, Medicine Lodge Unit of EHU.
Orville Carter is a truck driver and lives in Wichita. Howard is a professional
painter, and Albert is in landscaping in Hutchinson. My grandson, Tyrone Baker,
is making his home with me.
