Archie (Bud) Hill

Bud and Faye Summers Hill have always lived in this vicinity. Faye,
daugher of Joe and Gladys Elmore Summers, was born fifteen miles west
of Hardtner, just one half mile in Woods County, Oklahoma. I have one
sister, Lucille, and one brother, Jim. Bud, son of John Orliff and Edna
Sheddy Hill, was born a mile south of Hardtner. He had two sisters, Sadie
and Virginia Pearl, three brothers - Harold, Herbert, and John, all
     deceased.
I attended a country school my first year and rode horseback about three
miles. My first grade teacher was Mrs. art Beatty. She stayed in our home.
The school house burned, and the next three years I attended school in
Hardtner, living with my grandparents, Sam and Fannie Elmore. They rebuilt
the school house about one and a half miles from home, and my sister and
I walked through the pastures to school. When it snowed, our dad would ride
a horse and pull us on a big sled. Summertime was always a fun time -
relatives would gather, and we would go down to the Salf Fork River and
pick wild sandplums and grapes. We would wade in the river and cook our
     dinner over a campfire.
Bud attended the Hardtner school, and we graduated from high school there
in 1937. We were married in wichita, Kansas, August 10, 1940. We lived in
Alva, Oklahoma. He was employed by Omar Hill Funeral Home, and I was a
bookkeeper at Munson Hatchery. In 1942 Bud enrolled in the College of
Mortuary Science in St. Louis, Missouri, graduaing in 1943. I worked for
Emerson Electric Company, where they built turrets for Navy bombers in
World War II. After graduation, we returned to Alva, and he entered the
military service December 10, 1943. He served with the Graves Registration
Service of The United States Army and spent two years in New Guinea and
the Philippines. After his discharge May 4, 1946, he returned to Alva and
his former employment. A son Kent Alyn was born December 16, 1947.
In 1950 we moved to Kiowa, and he and Roscoe Ikerd established the Ikerd-
Hill Funeral HOme. A son, David Michael, was born January 15, 1952. In
February 1954 we bought the Ikerd interest and also the Kiowa Funeral Home
and moved to that location, changing the name to Hill Funeral Home. A son,
Ronald Gene, was born March 17, 1956.
We are all members of the Methodist Church. Bud was active in Community
affairs. He became ill May 23, 1970, with cancer and was hospitalized until
his death August 11th. He is buried in Hardtner Cemetery. I operated the
funeral home with the heop of Kent and his wife until December, 1917, when
I sold to Galen and Bertie Fisher of Pratt, Kansas.
All three children graduated from Kiowa. Kent graduated from Fort Hays
State College in 1969. He and his wife, Venita, and three daughters, Kendra,
Krista, and Kathy live in Kiowa. He is employed at First State Bank. Mike
graduated from Wichita State UIniversity in 1975. He is living in Kiowa
and engaged in cattle business. Ron is graduating from Northwestern State
University this year. He and his wife, Mary, and son, Jed, live in Alva.
