Mike Hilliard
Michael Dean Hilliard, son of L. Eugene and Dorothy (Markel) Hilliard, was born
July 26, 1945, at Montezuma, Kansas. With his parents, sister, Pat, and two brothers,
Bob and Steve, Mike moved to Medicine Lodge in 1960. He graduated from Medicine Lodge
High School and attended Dodge City Community College.
August 29, 1964, Mike and Sharon Kay Hayes were married in the Medicine Lodge
Christian Church. Sharon, only child of Philip Dwayne and Louella Grace (Heflin)
Hayes, was born November 25, 1946, in Enid, Oklahoma. In 1954 her family moved to
Medicine Lodge. She graduated from Medicine Lodge High School and Enid Business
College, Enid, Oklahoma. She completed additional college work at Northwestern State
University, Alva, Pratt Community College, and Emporia State University.
Mike worked for Barbara Oil Company until 1969, when he began employment in the
Skelly Gasoline Plant (now Getty Oil Company), where he continues today.
Sharon has been employed as a grocery clerk, a library secretary at Medicine
Lodge High School, and a legal secretary. She is a licensed income tax preparer.
Since 1977, when her parents opened their flower shop, Paradise Gardens and Green-
house, she works with them, assuming responsibility for the fresh flower business.
She completed futher classes and seminars in flower arranging.
From their honeymoon apartment the Hilliards moved to a trailer house; later they
purchased a home at 400 West Anthony. In 1975 they bought a large house at 319 North
Walnut.
They adopted a baby boy, Clinton Dwayne, born June 6, 1968. After long anticipation
and in the midst of moving, came a 45-hour notification that the baby was ready -
excitement was near hysteria. Family and friends brought order to the new house by
the time the new parents returned home with the infant. A tiny but active baby girl,
Heather Elizabeth, whose birth date is November 20, was adopted in 1972. The family
shares many amusement parks, swimming, baseball, etc.
Mike and Sharon are actibe in community organizations and projects. Mike served
two terms on the City Council, was president of Jaycees, a Cubmaster, Fund Raising
Chairman of Girl Scouts, and is a 32nd degree Mason and member of Midian Shrine.
Sharon served as president of Jaycee Jaynes and secretary of Eastern Star, a member
of Mother's Club and a Cub Scout den-Mother. She ws honored with selection in the
1977 edition of Outstanding Young Women of America. Both are members of the Christian
Church. Both participated in the "Prologue to Coronado" episode and in numerous other
capacities in the last three Indian Peace Treaty Pageants.
