Clinton Hindman
Clinton William Hindman, youngest son of George Washington and Lula Mae
(Skinner) Hindman, was born March 14, 1921, in Weir, Kansas, where he grew
up. He attended school in Weir. He spent two years in the CCC camp at
Farlington then decided to see the country, working on the railroad to
California. Later he worked on the construction of the 160 Highway, west
of Medicine Lodge.
My parents were Emil and Lila (Bradshaw) Heydenreich. I was born in
Medicine Lodge on January 29, 1922. I grew up and attended school here.
I was a member of the first kindergarten class here. Except for a year
and a half, when I attended rural school, District 34, all my schooling
was in the Medicine Lodge schools. I graduated from high school in 1940.
I grew up through the dirty thirties and remember how dark it became
when one of the dust storms blew in. Mother used to hang sheets and things
across the windows and doors, hoping to keep out some of the dust, but it
still seeped in, leaving a fine film on everything. I recall the school
picnic the last day of school at District 34. Dorothy Stewart was the
teacher, and she decided we'd go to the Gyp Hills for the picnic. A duster
moved in while we were picnicking, and it was so difficult to drive.
Clinton and I met here while he was employed in this area, and we were
married January 30, 1942, at Hazelton, Kansas. We lived in Lawrence, Kansas
when Clinton was called to serve in the armed forces in September 1942. I
joined him at Roswell, New Mexico, where we were fortunate to be for two
years before he went overseas. Our son, Clinton Eugene, was born there
November 28, 1943. I returned to Medicine Lodge to wait for his return
from overseas, and he joined us here. He was employed by Kansas Power and
Light Gasoline Plant, now known as the Getty Plant, where he is still
employed. Mary Ann was born September 15, 1946, Peggy Louise was born
March 19, 1951, and Betty on May 7, 1965.
I have been active throught the years in Girl Scouting and am still
involved. I have served as a leader, camp director, neighborhood chairman,
council committee chairman, and other jobs. I've served as VFW Auxiliary
president two terms and as Junior Mother's Club officer. I've worked at
several jobs through the years and presently an insurance clerk at the
Clinic. We are members of the Methodist Church, where I have been Sunday
School Superintendent for several years. I am now serving as assistant
Sunday School Superintendent.
We enjoy camping and Clinton's hobbies are fishing and hunting, which
he enjoys thoroughly. Our plans for the future are uncertain, but we
hope to someday be able to travel, seeing much of our great country.
