Joseph C. Hinshaw
Joe Hinshaw was born in Missouri in 1886. After finishing business college,
he owned the newspapers in Macksville, Kansas, and Valley Center, Kansas,
before moving to Medicine Lodge, where he was the editor and publisher of the
Barber County Index for fifteen years. He was married to Glyde DeVore of
Macksville, and there were four children, Dwight, of Burns, Oregon, Joe Nial,
who preceded him in death, Betty, of Wichita, and Jack. Glyde Hinshaw died
in 1927. In 1929 Glenola W. Wilkins and Joe Hinsaw were married. Glenola
served as County Superintendent and was active in Monday Afternoon Club, the
Library Board, Eastern Star, Business and Professional Women's Club, to name
a few of her interests.
Joe and his family were members of the Christian Church of Medicine Lodge.
He was an active member of the Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, a charter member
of the Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, etc. He was one of three who reorganized
and started the Indian Peace Treaty Pageant. He represented Barber County in
the Kansas Legislature. From Barber County Joe and Glenola moved to Milwaukie,
Oregon, and then to Claremont, California. He retired to Wichita, Kansas, to
be near his daughter and her family. Joe passed away in 1977 at the age of 91.
If he could have lived to have written this "history" there would be many
amusing anecdotes, for he was an avid reader and writer. Glenola Hinshaw
resides in Wichita.
