Guy Hittle

Guy P. Hittle, son of Wm. and Laura (Hartley) Hittle, was born in the
farm home near Lake City, Kansas. Later his father bought a farm near
Elm Mills. There were five boys and three girls in the Hittle family.
My parents wre Fred D. Hoyt and Alta Mae (Mitchell) Hoyt. Father was
born and reared in Marshall, Michigan, later moved to Clinton, Illinois,
where he met mother. She was born in Clinton, Illinois. They were married
there, later coming to Medicine Lodge with mother's parents, James and
     Elizabeth Mitchell.
I had two sisters, Luella (Hoyt) Swartz, deceased, and Myrtle Marie
(Hoyt) Sage, who lives in Fresno, California. Father worked for Standard
Oil Company, one of the first in this area. He retired from Standard Oil
     in 1938.
I met Guy Hittle when he worked for Jack Trice, St. Guy attended grade
school at Elm Mills and graduated from MEdicine Lodge High School. I
attended and graduated from the Medicine Lodge Schools. I am a member of
Eastern Star Chapter #39. Guy was a member of Delta Lodgte #77, Medicine
Lodge and the Wichita Consistory. Both were long time members of the
     Christian Church.
We were married in Pratt, Kansas, in 1924. Guy and I had two children,
Peggy Dean (Hittle) MacDonald and James P. (Jim) Hittle. Both are also
graduates of MLHS. Jim graduated from Southwestern College, Winfield,
Kansas, and received his Master's at Emporia State.
In 1929 Guy and Lloyd Clarke bought the Sweet Shop from Jibo Hewitt.
Lloyed soon bought the bakery, and Guy the confectionery. We operated
this business working side by side for 20 years.
During the years we were in the Sweet Shop, we had a little dance floor
in the back. A music box furnished the music for entertainment for a lot
of young people which we enjoyed so much. A talented musician from our
home town was George Griffin, who often played piano for us on special
     occasions.
Guy and I both loved music. We sang at church and for special happenings.
After we sold the Shp, Guy went into farming which he continued until his
     death in 1972.
I worked for Carper's Drug Store for several years, and after Mr. Carper
sold to Mr. Probst, I continued working until I retired.
Our son, Jim has been in the educational field and lives in Towanda. His
son, Thomas J., is a designer and contractor i9n Manhattan, and daughter,
Jan Dreau, is a senior at Emporia State.
Our daughter, Peggy Dean MacDonald, lives in Fresno, California. She has
three children; Bill Terry, Fresno; Kathy, Houston, Texas, works for Bell
Telephone Co.; and Steven, who lives in Fresno.
Bill Terry made his home with us. He was on the winning track team at
the State Meet in Wichita. He graduated from MLHS.
I was married October 3, 1976, to Earl Downing. He retired after 51 years
     as a barber.
I always wanted to leave Medicine Lodge, but ended up born, reared, and
suppose I'll die in "Dear Old Medicine Lodge" - A GOOD PLACE TO LIVE!!
