James Hosey
James R. Hosey and Elizabeth Hosey moved to Medicine Lodge in June, 1944. Mr.
Hosey was appointed station agent for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad.
Prior to this assignment, he had served agencies at Canton, Oklahoma, Pretty
Prairie, and Hazelton, Kansas. He was with the railroad for over 32 years before
his death in February 1947.
Between 194401947, Medicine Lodge became one of the largest revenue stations
on the Panhandle Division of the Santa Fe railroad. The leading commodities were
cattle, wheat, and gypsum products.
His eldest son, Ted, joined the station force as a telegrapher in 1945. He had
served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Ted married Deloris Soper of Medicine
Lodge in 1946 and is presently Santa Fe agent in Lubbock, Texas.
The Hosey's had seven children. The three youngest attended the Medicine Lodge
Public Schools. They were Donald ('45), Marilyn ('46), and Harold ('49).
Marilyn married Farel Warren of Medicine Lodge. She served as teller in the
First National Bank of Medicine Lodge between 1946 and 1953. Prior to her death
in 1978, she worked for the Fourth National Bank of Wichita.
Harold married Chrystine Gilmore of Medicine Lodge. In 1958 he returned to
Medicine Lodge as Principal of the primary and intermediate schools for eight
years. He is presently Superintendent of Schools at Emporia.
Other members of the Hosey family are Frances Hargadine of Derby, Margaret Bell
of Edmonds, Washington, and Dale of Goddard, Kansas.
Elizabeth Hosey continues to make her home in Medicine Lodge. She has sixteen
grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
