Harold E. Hoss
Harold E. Hoss, son of Hulbert E. (Hullie) and Esther (Long) Hoss
married JoAnn Washburn, daughter of P.E. and Lillian (Callahan) Washburn.
They have two children, Herbert E. Hoss and Janet Jo Wilcox, and five
grandchildren.
Harold is ranching in the northwest corner of Barber County purchased
by Hullin in 1918. This ranch had two log cabins, a rock barn, and rock
corrals at the time of the purchase. It was settled originally by several
different individuals. ONe of which was known as "Buffalo" Smith. Smith
was so named because he made his living hunting buffalo and having
traveled through this area with a wagon train some years before settlement,
vowed that he would settle a claim on Turkey Creek if the Red Man ever
vacated it. Eventually, he came back and settled the portion where the
main headquartes now stand. He brought with him a black man called "Liege"
and immediately they started hauling rock from about five miles southwest
of headquarters and built a rock barn known now to be well over 100 years
old. They lived in the top of the barn and proceeded to build the rock
corrals. Then they built a log cabin which was fashioned after the log
cabins in the South. Two rooms with a breezeway in between. Finding many
wild grapes on the ranch they then built a large wine cellar and planted
many apple trees mainly for cidar. Gettin up in years and growing weary
of one place, he decided to sellout and move on.
Hullie built a new house in 1921, where Harold was born. The rock barn
is still standing and also part of the corrals. The log cabin, after going
through many families living in it, cyclone, floods, etc. is in bad shape
but still is standing upright.
Harold is active int he Masonic Lodge, Saddle Club and Eastern Star.
JoAnn is employed at the Coats State Bank in Coats, Kansas, and enjoys OES
and other club activities.
