Raymond A. Hough

Born in Perry, Oklahoma, August 23, 1927, Raymond Hough, son of Curtis
     R. and Ruth Ann (Elswick) Hough, graduated from Derby, Kansas, high school
and served in the U.S. Navy. He met and married Margarett Carolyn Lonker,
daughter of R.W. 'Pat' and Marjorie Lonker, in 1948 while they were both
attending Southwestern College at Winfield, Kansas. The ceremony was
performed in Medicine Lodge at the Methodist Church.
Mr. Hough taught school 2 years in Mound Valley, Kansas, and obtained
his B.S. Degree from Southwestern before they moved to Leavenworth, Kansas,
where he became athletic director and teacher to military dependents at
Fort Leavenworth public schools in 1952.
Margarett served as registrar at the high school, an elementary school
secretary, and editorial analyst for a government research corporation.
Their 3 children - John Raymond, Dan Russel, and Teresa Jo grew to adult-
hood in Leavenworth. John married Carol DeWeese, daughter of Orland and
Edna Mae DeWeese of Medicine Lodge, Dan Married Shirley Wetzel, a Leaven-
     worth resident.
Meanwhile, Raymond obtained his M.S. Degree from Kansas State College
of Emporia in 1964. He retired from the field of education 11 years later.
The Houghs spent 2 years in Ruidoso, New Mexico, where they owned and
operated a retail auto parts business before returning to Medicine Lodge
     in 1975.
They moved into the farm home 3 miles west of town once occupied by
Margarett's grandparents, Ocea (Lawry) and Ernest T. Lonker. E.T. Lonker
purchased the Crumpacker land from H.D. Fair and G.A. Hibbard and built
a 6 room 'bungalow' 60 years prior. The Houghs maintained a horse operation
on the farm, raising registered Appaloosa and quarter horses.
In 1975 the Houghs established the Flying H. Western Store on South Main.
The store was relocated in 1978 to west highway 160, near the 281 junction,
where they purchased and remodeled the building, originally built as a
     service station.
