Merle Hoyt
Edith Marguerite Peterie, second daughter of J.T. and Blanche (Bailey) Peterie, attended KSTC
at Emporia, as had her sister Fanelle. She then taught in Pratt County and Isabel Schools. She
married Merle L. Hoyt on May 24, 1936, at the Peterie farm home.
Merle was a native of Beaver County, Oklahoma. His parents, Gus L. and Vida (Meeks) Hoyt,
pioneered again near Gunnison, Colorado, and came back to Pawhuska, Oklahoma, before Merle and his
sisters Vivian and Helen, came to Barber County. The Hoyt family were also Kansas Pioneers, having
lived in Lincoln County before coming to Sharon Valley and Attica.
After twelve years in Wichita, Merle and Edith and their nine year old daughter, Janet Sue,
moved to Dallas, Texas. Their roots are still in Barber County (Isabel and Valley Township) since
they own the farm and house of both parents and grandparents.
Janet Sue married Sam Sperry (whom she met at the University of New Mexico) and lives in
Helena, Montana, with daughters, Susan and Elizabeth.
