Esther Clarke Hudson
I was born Esther Frances Clarke on August 5, 1940, in Medicine Lodge,
Kansas, to Dale Arthur and Donna Lorene (McKaig) Clarke. I have one brother,
Charles, born January 15, 1938. My grandparents were William Arthur and
Josephine (Strickland) Clarke and Ernest and Nelle Frances (Shanks) McKaig.
I grew up on our farm 7 1/2 miles west of Medicine Lodge on the old
Bert Strickland place. Charles and I attended Mingona School nearby. During
that time I joined 4-H, learning to cook and sew, also to square dance. I
also took piano lessons on through high school.
I was baptized April 9, 1952, becoming a member of the First Christian
Church in Medicine Lodge. I transferred to Medicine Lodge School for 7th
grade and continued ther through high school, participating in vocal music
groups, band, etc. My senior year I received an I rating for my bass clarinet
solo at state festival. I graduated from high school in May, 1958.
I attended KSU, Manhattan, for 1 year, then transferred to Ft. Hays State
for 1 semester for a business course. I wnet to work as a bookkeeper at First
National Bank in Pratt. I soon met my future husband, Garry Hudson, in church
in Medicine Lodge. He is a native of Illinois, born October 23, 1930. He was
staying with Rev. John Scantlands and soon enrolled in Manhattan Christian
College. We were married August 28, 1960, and moved to Manhattan. The summer
of 1961 we moved to Chicago, as Gerry went to work for Northwest Airlines
at O'Hare Airport and I worked at Universal Oil. In February 1962, we came
back to Kansas rather than transfer to New York, and lived in Hutchinson a
short time, then to Wichita where Garry went to work for J.C. Penny as
interior decarator and I worked at Central State Bank. A year later on
September 17, 1963, we were gifted with a beautiful daughter, Laurie Frances.
We were charter members of the Town and Country Christian Church, where Charles
Cook was minister. Laurie was the first baby born in that church.
We bought our first home in 1964 at 1208 Silverdale, Wichita. We lived
there until 1969 when Garry was laid off at Cessna, and we moved to Haysville.
Garry has been in law enforcement about 10 years and is now with the Kansas
Turnpike Authority. I have been in banking about 10 years, working as a
drive-in teller. I was church secretary several years. We've lived in
Haysville since 1969, all except one year when Garry was Undersheriff in
Anderson County.
Haysville is really home to Laurie, since she has spent most of her life
here. She is a good student and her favorite subjects are music and drama.
She has been in drill team, show choir, and chorus. She was recently in the
musical 'Fiddler on the Roof' and has just received a part in an original
play 'Beau Tie', written by a local girl. It was selected as one of our
four plays out of 600 to perforem in New York in August. I plan to go as
a sponsor. I will be our first jet ride.
