Manly Huff

Manly Huff was born in Harrison County, Missouri, May 8, 1899. He was
the son of Charles and Anna Myra (Flint) Huff. He came to Burlington,
Oklahoma, to help his brother0in-law John Alder, harvest and put in the
wheat crop. In 1921, he met Opal Jester, daughter of the L.A. Jesters, who
was helping the Alder's neighbor cook for harvesters.
They were married in 1923 and lived in Driftwood, Oklahoma, where he
farmed two years. In 1926 Manly went to work for the Oklahoma Highway
Department. They lived near Burlington until 1930, when they moved to
Medicine Lodge. Manly worked at various road jobs until 1937, when they
moved to Sun City where he worked at the Gypsum mines three years. He was
transferred to the Best Bros. Keenes Cement Plant (later National Gypsum -
now Gold Bond Products) in Medicine Lodge. He worked there until his
     retirement at age 65 years.
Opal worked at various jobs in Medicine Lodge, during and just after
the Depression, to help out. She cooked at carious cafes and at the
     Sharon school several years.
They had four children who all attended the Medicine Lodge schools.
They are Earl Elwin, who married Rowena Austin, and lives in North Platte,
Nebraska, where he works for Union Pacific Railroad; Julia Luann (Mrs.
Don) Hart who lives in Wichita and is with food services at Boeing; William
     M. (Bill) who married Shirley (Sherry Lister), they live in Topeka where
Bill is in engineering with a construction firm; and Darlene (Mrs. James)
Pinkston who lives in Haysville and works for TG&Y. The Huffs have eleven
     grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
After being retired two years and the children were all married and away,
the couple went to Wichita, where they were houseparents at the Institute
of Logopedics - a school for speech handicapped and retarded children. They
found this the most gratifying experience of their lives. Manly did
     maintenance there also.
After six years, and with failing health, they returned to their home in
Medicine Lodge. Manly loved to garden and fish. Opal canned the produce,
and she did lovely hand work until visual problems hindered. They were
     Methodist.
Manly passed away October 26, 1978. Opal now lives with Bill and Sherry
in Topeka. She spends time with the other children also.
