John Hybsha


        John Hybsha, rancher-banker, was born in a sod house at Bluff City,
     Kansas, August 20, 1885. His parents were A.L. and Anna Lebeda Hybsha.
     His grandparents and their children having immigrated to America from
     Bohemia (now Czechoslovakia).
        John Hybsha grew up and was educated in the Bluff City area. The
     Hybshas were one of the largest landowners in Harper County and also
     owned some land in Sumner County. They were also engaged in the general
     mercantile business in Bluff City under the firm name of "A.L. Hybsha
     and Son" and later bought controlling interest in the State Bank of
     Bluff City. John Hybsha was also associated with the Caldwell State
     Bank at Caldwell, Kansas.
        While at Caldwell, John Hybsha married Mary Kucera, and they became
     parents of two daughters, Helen and Dorothy.
        In the summer of 1921, three years after the death of his first wife
     in 1918, John Hybsha, his two daughters and his parents moved to Barber
     County, purchased and settled on a 1600 acre ranch northeast of Medicine
     Lodge.
        On August 20, 1925, John Hybsha married Mary Ellen Axtell, the
     daughter of William Allison Axtell and Florence Isabel Vennum Axtel. To
     this union were born three children: Maurine Ellen, born March 28, 1929,
     John Lloyd, born September 28, 1931, and Adolph Allison, born October 5,
     1932.
        John Hybsha engaged in ranching in Barber County until August 1936. He
     then moved to a Sumner County farm located between Bluff City and Caldwell,
     Kansas. His parents remained in Barber County until their deaths.
        The Hybshas were devout Christians, were always willing to help friends
     and strangers alike. They were ever-active in church and community affairs.
        John Hybsha was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Bluff City, Kansas,
     and the Scottish Rite at Wichita, Kansas.
        His wife, Mary Ellen Axtell Hybsha, passed away August 4, 1962. John
     Hybsha followed her in death December 25, 1965.
        The Hybsha children as of this writing are residing in the following
     locations: Helen Hybsha Walker, widowed, lives in Oronogo, Missouri,
     Dorothy Hybsha Branson and husband, Lester, retired and lving in Manhattan,
     Kansas. Maurine Hybsha Lefugy, widowed, lives in Yonkers, New York. John
     Lloyd Hybsha, retired from the Newton Fire Department, now an insurance
     agent, lives in Newton, Kansas, with his wife Delores. Adolph Allison
     Hybsha, still single, is an attorney in Wichita, Kansas.
