John Lloyd Hybsha
John Lloyd Hybsha was born September 28, 1931, northeast of Medicine
Lodge, Kansas, on a ranch owned by his parents, John Hybsha and Mary
Ellen Axtell Hybsha. Early in life he developed a fondness for open
country and love for animals, especially horses. He moved with his
parents to Sumner County in 1936, returning often to the Medicine Lodge
area to visit his grandparents and other relatives.
As a boy he helped his father with the farming and livestock operations.
John attended a one-room country school (District #155) and later graduated
from Caldwell High School in 1949.
John Lloyd Hybsha was married to Barbara Lee Scott. They had three
children, Mary Lee, born March 18, 1949; Leslie Loyd, born May 1, 1955;
and Lois Ann, born August 27, 1958. This marriage ended indivorce.
During the 1950's John was engaged in farming and construction work,
but took time out to do plenty of traveling.
In 1958 John went to work on the Newton Fire Department at Newton, Kansas,
where he worked as a firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician for well
over 20 years. He is now associated with Central Agency, Inc., an insurance
agency in Newton.
John was active in Boy Scout work for many years, serving in capacities
from Sout Master, O.A. Advisor to District Commissioner. John had the
honor of being awarded the "Silver Beaver." He has traveled on five
continents and is noted all over south-central Kansas for his talks and
speeches in reference to his world travels and youth work.
John is an active member of Masonic Lodge #142 and York Rite, Newton;
Scottish Rite, Salina; and Midian Shrine in Wichita, where he is a member
of the Midian Million Dollar Band and The Flying Fezz.
On February 2, 1974, John married Dolores Hoyle Schmidt. With this
marriage John became the step-father of six boys. Kent, born January 3,
1953; Danny, born April 3, 1954; Gary, born April 3, 1955; Rick, born
March 20, 1956; Timothy born May 21, 1957; and Rob, born May 27, 1963.
When John and the seven boys get together things happen.
Although extensive world travel has been limited in recent years, John
still enjoys traveling when possible and taking camping trips with his
boys.
John believes that as Americans, if we maintain a strong devotion to
God and country, and teach these same principles to our young people, we
can hold in our hands a power mightier than the Atomic Bomb.
