John E. Johnson
For Johnny Johnson September, 1951, was a time of upheaval and change, as
the family of Bill and Lydia Johnson moved to Medicine Lodge from Longdale,
Oklahoma, which always had been home to this fifteen-year old.
Johnny found immediate employement with Hibbard's Rexall Drug Store,
running errands, sweeping floors, and other tasks, after-school and summers.
The following summer his romance with Laura Willan began; it was
consumated in marriage, July 28, 1957, in Medicine Lodge.
Both graduated from the University of Kansas, returning to Medicine Lodge
to pursue their professions - Laura as a physical therapist and Johnny as a
pharmacist. Parenthood, with its ups and downs, crises and splendors, became
the focus of thier attention when Lettitia Kay was born, July 9, 1959. Of
her many achievements, a highlight was her selection as an exchange student
to Sweden from July 1976 to July 1977. Returning, she attended Bethany College
one year and then transferred to the University of Kansas.
Lee Ann, born in March 8, 1961, is active in all aspects of schooll life;
but, since seventh grade, basketball has engrossed her interest. In 1977 she
played on the fourth-place team in the All-State Class A tournament.
Lenise Elaine was born April 30, 1963, her grandparent Johnsons' wedding
anniversary. Her vivacity brought a sparkle and joy to her family and many
others. Her prime interests are forensics and basketball.
John Conley (called "J.C.") was born February 5, 1966. His present interests
converge in athletics - participation in junior high football and basketball
and summer baseball.
The family hobby of breeding, raising, and showing horses (first, Pony-of-
America shows; later Appaloosa) resulted in travels throughout mid-America
and merited many state and national awards.
The family has shared in many community activities, including the United
Methodist Church and its Youth Fellowship, Masons, Eastern Star, and Rainbow
Girls; 4-H; Monday Afternooon Club; Jaycees and Jaycee Janes; Peace Treaty
Pageant Association.
Sharing thier home with others has been a recurring and rewarding experience.
In 1961 Bonnie Sanders, a foster daughter, joined the family and continued her
education in MLHS, graduating in 1964. After a year at Pittsburg State College,
she enrolled and graduated from cosmetology school in Pratt in 1966. That same
year she was killed in a tragic automobile accident.
The family of Doug and Barb Dale, Laura's sister, lived with Johnsons six
months, before moving to Moscow, Kansas. Johnsons were host family for Allison
Ballantine, a South African student, during the school year 1974-5. That year
Cecil Hancock came from Australia to assist in the family's horse operation;
he remained three years. Kristina Pauser, a Swedish exchange student, has
resided with the family in 1978-9.
Although the family's outreach expanded through these experiences, its roots
are deep in local history. The Mounsey family immigrated from England to
Medicine Lodge in 1889. Their daughter Ada married Simon Roe Willan, who farmed
northwest of town. In 1929 their son John Johnson Willan married Elsie Alla
Coppock from Oklahoma. Their daughter Laura Ann wed John Elmer Johnson; their
children are fifth generation Barber County residents.
