Tempest Smith Johnson

Tempest Smith was born on her parents' homestead in the Cherokke Strip,
Oklahoma, and attended rural school there; then graduated from Kiowa High
School with the class of '22; taught school three years - two at Elwood
(approximately one mile west and one mile south of Union Chapel) and one
  year at Canema School.
She met Galen Johnson during that time. They were married May, 1926, in
a sunrise ceremony at the Methodist Church parsonage in Kiowa, Kansas.
Their first home was on the J.R. Holmes ranch, where Galen and his
father were living and he was farming. They lived there six years.
One day she was on her way home from Medicine Lodge on the old Gyp Hill
road. About half way up the hill, the steering wheel came off. She auto-
matically stepped on the brake and set the emergency brake. Luckily the
nut that held the steering wheel on was in the seat beside her. She put it
on and drove on home. It wasn't until she stopped to open the last of three
gates to their house that she got so sick and realized how frightened she
was. But no bad after-effects. Their first baby was born in six-weeks.
Their three oldest children, Galen Oren, Patricia Ann, and Wilber Smith,
were born there. The summer of '32 the Depression was on. Galen said he
couldn't afford to raise wheat to sell for 35 cents per bushel; so they
moved to a small farm near Sleigman, Missouri, then back to Kiowa, Kansas.
In the spring they came to work for Earl Holmes and lived there for 13 years.
Tempest Janet was born there. They moved to Cherryvale, Kansas. Galen's
health was failing, primarily because he was gassed in France during World
  War I.
Oren graduated from Medicine Lodge with the class of '46. After the family
moved, he started for Alaska. He then worked and studied to become an
electrician. He met and married Pauline Medved in Chicago. They returned to
Alaska and established their home in Anchorage. Soon after, they established
their own electric business which they still operate.
Patricia's eyesite was beginning to fail. She took one semester of her
sophomore year at Independence, Kansas, and then transferred to Ozark Bible
College at Joplin, Missouri. She graduated from high school there and also
earned some college credits. She later married Dean Fithian, a chemist. They
  now live in Alba, Missouri.
Wilbur and Janet finished grade school and high school in Cherryvale. Both
attended Midwest Christian College, Oklahoma City. They both met their future
mates there. Wilbur married Imalee Barrick, and Janet married Harold A. Prough.
After graduation both couples went into the minstry in Christian Churches.
Wilbur lives in Arkansas City, Kansas, and is doing evangelistic work at this
time. Janet and Harold are in Ponca City, Oklahoma at this time.
After the family moved to Cherryvale, Galen was in the Veteran's Hospital
at Topeka for several months. Several years he worked as custodian at a club
in Wichita, under the supervision of the Veterans Rehabilitation Center, until
  he retired.
Soon after they moved to Cherryvale, Tempest worked two years in the
Independence Hospital. She established in her home a private nursing home,
which she operated for twenty-four years. She let the last patient go in 1975
so she could devote more time to the care of Galen. He died March, 1976.
She presently has sixteen grandchildren and thre great grandchilren. She
lives at home and keeps busy with different activities.
