Reece Jones

The pins were not the only things that fell for Reece Jones in Ed Dill's
bowling alley upstairs over the Sweet Schop in Medicine Lodge. A young
bookkeeper at Lodge Chevrolet, Margaret Sommer, also 'fell' for him.
James Reece, only child of Blaine and Willa York JOnes, was born June 18,
1905, at Baird, Oklahoma. His mother died in his early childhood, and he
lived with his grandmother Jones at Kingsville, Mo. When he was 9, he
returned to his father's home in Lake City and grew up with Helen and Luther,
children of Frankie Belle Galaher-Stafford, who had married his father. He
received his education in the Lake City Schools and took part in the activities
of Skinner Ranch, where his father was foreman.
Margaret, daughter of Fred and Mattie (Oakes) Sommer, was born in June,
1907, at Kiowa, Kansas. She has a brother, Eugene. They grew up and received
their education in the Kiowa Schools, where she graduated from KHS in 1926.
Margaret's father operated a grain elevator there.
Margaret learned bookkeeping and began work at Bertoglio's Chevrolet Agency
in Kiowa in 1932, later coming to Medicine Lodge to continue working at Lodge
  Chevrolet.
Reece was inducted into the armed forces in February, 1942, and he and
Margaret married at Guthrie, Oklahoma, on May 24, 1942. Reece served with
137th Infantry in the European theater during WWII. His overseas service
included D-Day, Normandy Beach landing, and moving into the Rhineland, the
Battle of the Bulge in Ardennes. He received his honorable discharge in August
1945, and returned to Medicine Lodge to continue the war-interrupted employment
with the Engineering Division of Kansas Highway Dept.
While Reece was overseas, Margaret worked at the Federal Penitentiary at
  Leavenworth, Kansas.
Reece and Margaret returned to Medicine Lodge in 1945, and in 1948 built a
four-plex, where they lived. A daughter, Jeanne Frances (b.1942) joined their
family and blessed their life. She was educated in the Medicine Lodge Schools,
where she participated in the Music Department. She was band majorette and an
accomplished pianist. She attended KU and is a qualified IBM operator and
  secretary.
Both of the Jones retired in 1967 and enjoyed the farming and livestock
interests. Summers were spent in their trailer home at Lake Isabel, Colorado.
Reece passed away August 23, 1975. Margaret returned to part-time employment
in the Parts Dept. at Lodge Chevrolet to fill part of her time; she enjoys
knitting, crochet, and latch-hooking rugs and wall hangings.
Jeanne and her three children, Tonya, Rusty, and Darci Hamilton live in
  Tuttle, Oklahoma.
