Larry A. Keahey
The Keaheys moved to Medicine Lodge in August of 1967 from Bucklin, Kansas,
where Larry was the junior high athletic coach and Ruby was bookkeeper for
the Farmer's State Bank. Having met while attending college at Alva, Oklahoma,
the family has lived in Kansas since 1966. Larry was born at Shattuck, Okla.,
and grew up in White Deer, Texas, a small town in the Panhandle of Texas,
while Ruby was born at Hardtner, Kansas and grew up in Alva.
The actual family name is MacKeachey and is Irish and Scotch in origin. It
is derived from the Gaelic or Irish Mac or Mag Eachaidh and is a sept or
dependent of the MacDonald or Clan Ranald. The 'ch' before the last syllable
was not pronounced as we do it in modern English; it was an 'h' sound. As
time went by our ancestors dropped the prefix 'Mac'; some censustaker spelled
it phonetically, and it came out as we have it today. It is a family tradition
that the Keaheys left Scotland because of religious persecution, resided
briefly in North Ireland, and then came to Pennsylvania.
Karla was born in Dodge City, and when the family moved to Medicine Lodge
she was one year old. Noland was born in January, 1970, being the "New Year's
Baby" in Barber County.
Ruby has been employed locally since moving here and is presently assistant
manager at Miller's Home and Auto. She also serves as secretary of the City
Planning Commission.
In 1970 Larry completed his Masters degree at NWOSU in guidance and
counseling. He has spent his summers attending college and working. Since
1975 he has been on the City Recreation Comission and is director fo the
baseball and softball program. A recent venture was the completion of
insurance schooling in Wichita and association with Franklin Life Insurance.
The children have always had a love for animals; at one time or another
they have had dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, fish, a racoon,
ducks, chickens, and a couple of horses. Karla enjoys working in the
concession stand at the park, and Noland can be found mowing the field and
helping get it ready for a game. Noland plays baseball in the summer baseball
program. Karla was the junior high cheerleader mascot at the age of two.
The family is very active in sports in the community, attending junior high
and high school events, refereeing, keeping statistics, and playing in the
summer ball program.
