Wilbur H. Kimball
Wilbur H. Kimball, youngest of seven children born to Jaspar and Maria
Kimball, both of whom were born in Ohio, was born in El Dorado, Kansas,
November 17, 1888. The family moved to Barber County in 1904, purchasing
farm and ranch land in the Mingona area. Jaspar died in 1922 and Maria in
1940.
Wilbur married Jane Jesse, May 20, 1908. they farmed the home place
until 1935, when they moved to Medicine Lodge. In addition to farming,
he was an insurance salesman. In the 1940's Wilbur and Jane lived in
Neosho, Missouri, Pratt, and Wichita, Kansas, then moved to Sharon until
his death April 6, 1966. Jane now lives in the Indian Hills Apartments
in Medicine Lodge.
I, Georgia Mae, their daugher, recall my childhood spent on the farm,
attending Mingona and Medicine Lodge Schools, wehre I graduated from High
School in 1936. During high school, I worked for my board and room and
also in the Sweet Shop for Guy and Flossie Hittle. I then worked in the
extension office and was secretary for County Agent V.E. McAdams. I had
one older brother, Lewis. He was born July 28, 1909, and I was born March
11, 1918.
In the early 1940's Lewis served in the Air Force. He married Mabel
Clampitt in July, 1943, later moving to Oregon, where he lived until his
death in August, 1975.
I married Dale Johnson December 21, 1940. We tackled many jobs, Dale
first working on construction and I, as secretary for MIC, Wichita, and
for the commanding officer, Camp Crowder, Missouri. Dale built our first
home, an 18-foot trailer house. In 1942, while working at the airbase at
Salina, we traded for a new 24-footer. In May, 1943, we started south with
our new home and arrived in Pratt, where we still live. We have two children,
Judith Gail, born July 4, 1943, and Gregory Lynn, born June 11, 1946.
We bought and started repairing an old house in the summer of 1943, and
are still making changes on it. Since there were war yars, we were unable to
buy an electrick refrigerator, a bathtub, and even had to wait for a telephone.
Our varied occupations in Pratt have been Dale's starting as a carpenter;
then owner-operator of a filling station, trucking business; hauling hay,
posts and vegetables; trailer court owner; furniture refinishing; and mobile
home service. We ran the first Nationwide trailer rental business in Pratt,
and later sold new and used mobile homes. In December, 1960, Blondie Jordan
and I started the first Pizza Hut in Pratt. In 1963 I bought her interest and
sold the entire business in November 1965, to the present owner.
In Pratt I have worked as secretary to an insureance agent, an accountant,
Independent Lumber Co., County Clerk's office, for Attorneys Clarence Renner
and Alan Hanson. I am an income tax practioner, starting in the 1950's with
an office at home. Dale keeps busy looking after our rentals, consisting of
mobile homes, a trailer court, an apartment and a business building.
Our four grandchildren - Judy's three and Gregory's one - are now one of
our great enjoyments.
