David Kirkbride
David Kirkbride was born September 9, 1885, and grew up in Penrith, England,
where he helped his father, David Henry Kirkbride, run the family store. His
mother died when he was very small, leaving David and his sister, Agnes, to
face many lonely days.
When David was about ten, he started singing in his church choir. The choir
often sang for the royal families. Agnes married Donald Masson. They had four
children: Ella, Donald, Louise, and John.
When Dave was twenty-two, he decided to go to America. He joined the English
Settlement in Medicine Lodge in December, 1907. He worked for Bert Catlin and
Henry Goddard on their farms until his cousin, Ed (Doc) Kirkbride, came from
England. They began farming together north of Medicine Lodge around 1911. After
several years, Doc decided to go on to Canada. There he married Bessie Wilson
of Saskatoon. They later moved to New Zealand.
Dave married Grace Darling Richardson, daughter of the Tommy Richardsons,
on June 15, 1913. They had two boys: David Henry, February 28, 1916, and John
Wallace, October 14, 1918. Dave and Grace farmed the Goddard place until about
1920, when they moved to the Richardson farm to help Grace's father. Grace's
mother died in May, 1935, and by 1938, her father, Tommy, was confined to a
wheelchair due to paralysis. The Kirkbrides took care of Tommy during his long
years of paralysis until Grace died of a heart attack June 1, 1943.
Wally had married Mary Louise Harbaugh, and Hank had married Verdie Irene
Groves. David Lynn was born to Hank and Verdie on Flag Day, June 14, 1943, two
weeks after Grace's death. He helped fill the big void in the lives of Dave
and Tommy.
Karen Lou was born December 28, 1943, to Wally and Louise while Wally was
in service during World War II.
Dorothy Lee arrived March 1, 1945, a little sister to David Lynn. John
Henry joined the family January 24, 1951, and Traci Ann completed the family
April 14, 1960, on Maundy Thursday.
Gary Wallace arrived February 25, 1949, completing Wally and Louise's
family.
Dave passed many hours fishing; and when he was disabled with emphysema
and heart trouble, he enjoyed sports on radio and television. Dave died
January 22, 1971, at eighty-five years, the same age his father was when he
died.
