Tave Korff
Bernice Bryson Korff was born at Farry, Oklahoma, on a farm, the daughter
of George and Iva Morland Bryson, in 1915 and twelve years later the family
moved to Alva, Oklahoma.
The summer of 1930 I took care of two pre-school children. I earned $5.00
a week for twelve weeks and earned $60.00 and took $54.00 home to my parents
who in turn bought books and clothing for their four children to return to
school. Part of the $60.00 was spent for a bathing suit and a season swimming
ticket for my self. My growing up years I was cathcer on the Alva "Green
Bugs" softball team that was coached by Nels Nelson.
During my school years I worked at Nalls Cafe where my Mother was also
employed. In 1934 Nalls Cafe was where I met my future husband. Gustave Korff
was born at Kingman, Kansas, in 1906 and later the family moved to Capron,
Oklahoma, on a farm.
In 1934 due to the encouragement of the manager, I moved to the new Harry's
Cafe in Enid, working there for five years.
Tave and I were married September 2, 1939, at Pauls Valley, Oklahoma and
then moved five miles southeast of Kiowa on a farm.
Tave enlisted in the Air Force in 1942 and was stationed nearly all that
time at Vance Air Force Base at Enid, Oklahoma, where I was employed at the
Youngblood Hotel as a waitress for nearly three eyars. After Tave's discharge
from the Army in 1945, we returned to the farm.
We belonged to a couples' bridge club in Kiowa. We attended the big band
dances. Also enjoyed boarting, reading; and eating out was something we both
enjoyed.
I am a member of Kiowa Congregational Church, a "born again" Christian, a
member of a Bible study group, past secretary-treasurer of Pilgrim Daughters,
past president of Sew and So Club, a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post
No. 146, and a former member of Friendship Farming Community Club.
I was emplyed at Wilhelm's Dress Shop for two years, which they opened in
1960.
Wanting to be close to our farming interests and the people we know, we
moved to Kiowa, Kansas, October 23, 1967.
Tave and I enjoyed retirement from the farm for eleven years, after having
farmed for 50 years. Tave passed away May 22, 1978. The land is rented and the
farm house is rented by the Harold Wenzels; and I continue to enjoy Barber
County, having lived in and around this area nearly 40 years.
