In the spring of 1956 a couple of newcomers, Theron and Phyllis Krehbiel,
arrived in Medicine Lodge to take a new job. They and their two children,
Lynne, aged 4, and Elaine, 5 months, had moved from Wellington, Where Theron
had been employed as assistant county agricultural agent. The job in Medicine
Lodge was as County Agent. The county was without a Home Economics Agent so
Theron, with the help of his secretary, Sandy Schiff Vandeveer, was able to
keep the extension program going. During this period, Phyllis was raising the
family and giving music lessons to supplement the family income.
Both Theron and Phyllis were natives of Butler County. Phyllis was from El
Dorado and theron from Rosalia. Theron graduated from Kansas State University
in 1950, with a degree in Agriculture, and Phyllis from Emporia State in 1951
with a degree in music.
Prior to coming to Medicine Lodge, both had taught school and worked in
aircraft factories. Theron had been a herdsman on Registered Hereford Ranches
at Hutchinson and Piper, Kansas. Previous residences included Manhattan,
Emporia, Saffordville, Hutchinson, Piper, El Dorado, Garden Plain, Wichita,
Andover, and Wellington.
In August of 1959 a vacancy for the position of Farm Service Representative
at the First National Bank existed, and Theron was hired. He continues him
employement at the bank and is currently Vice-Pres.
In 1959, an eventful year, another daughter, Lisa, was born. The same year
the family purchased 7 acres of land from Albert Wheelock. This property had
a house and barn but needed considerable repair and renovation before it could
be considered habitable. With the family doing the work the house became fit
to move into in Oct. This continues to be the place of abode for the family.
Another girl, Leslie, was born in March of 1965. The two older girls attended
school at District 10, 1 1/2 miles east of the farmstead. The teacher was Edith
Haynes. When the school was closed in 1964, all students went to Medicine Lodge.
Theron was a District 10 school board member with Lee Gress and Mary Alice
Thomas.
In 1961 the family purchased 80 registered Suffold ewes, and this successful
endeavor continues to this day. The flock is reputed to be one of the best in
the state. This was a family project and was instrumental in financially helping
the girls get through college.
Lynn attended K-State for 2 years and graduated from Wichita State in 1973,
with a degree in nursing. She was emplyed by the city of Wichita as Community
Health Nurse for some time, but is now in Shawnee Mission with husband Greg, and
daughter, Stephanie Dawn. Greg (Larson) is an architect with Hallmark, Inc., in
Kansas City. Elaine attended College at Emporia State, majoring in music. She
and huysband, Tim Larson, live in Minneola, where she is vocal music instuctor.
Tim teaches English and is on the coarching staf at Dodge City High School.
Lisa is a junior at Emporia State, majoring in music; and Leslie is an 8th
grader interested especially in sports, music, and 4-H Club work.
Over the years Phyllis has been very active in farm work and in assisting
with the sheep operation. For the past several years she has been choir director
at the United Methodist Church.
In 1971 the family purchased 227 acres of land adjoining the original 7 acres.
This land was known as the Edwin H. Wright farm and was bought from Byron Smith.
It is located just west of the National Gypsum Plant. At the time of purchase
it was being farmed by Bruce Slinkard. In 1974 an additional 766 acres was
purchased. This property joined the 227 acres and is located just west and south
of the Medicine Lodge city. Two hundred fifty acres was known as the Elmer
Angell place and other farms in the tract were once owned by I.E. Brown, Frank
Fishburn, Wm. T. Morris. Zeal Johnson, and Geo. A. Hibbard, all Barber County
oldtimers.
In coming to Medicine Lodge the Krehbiel's had truly found a home.
