Earl Kuhn
Earl, born October 5, 1947, Victoria, Kansas, son of Emil and Zita (Giebler)
Kuhn, was third of seven children. He grew up in Plainville, where his family
ran a grocery store. At the age of 5, Earl's job was "cleaning eggs" and
stacking pop bottles. Earl worked in the store through high school until the
store was sold.
While at fort Hays State College, Earl developed his talent as a Western
Artist, by doing paintings and drawings for friends and by painting rodeo
signs in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Colorado. Earl met Kasey at a Rodeo Club
meeting, where Kasey was a member of the Rodeo Team.
Originally from Medicine Lodge, Kasey, daughter of Dale and Marge Lukens,
won many awards in Little Britches Rodeos while in high school, riding a
registered Paint Horse name "Spot." Kasey began riding with her dad before
she could walk. Many hours of diligent practice earned numberous trophies,
buckles, and saddles. All_Around Championships were won in 1965 at St. John
and Medicine Lodge Little Britches Rodeos. In 1966 she won All-Around honors
at Ulysses, Wichita, St. John, and Medicine Lodge. At the National Finals
Little Britches Rodeo, Littleton, Colorado, Kasey won the Runner-up to World
Champion All-Around Cowgirl Saddle. In 1964 and 1966, Kasey won the National
Little Britches Queen Title and served as National Youth Director in 1966.
Little Britches provided lasting friendships and keen competition. Sportsman-
ship of Little Britches competitors was a fantastic sensation, more exciting
than winning any honors or saddle.
In 1964 Kasey won the National Champion Paint Barrel RAcer and third in
Pole Bending riding :Spot.: In 1967 Kasey showed her dad's filly to the
National Championship at the National Show. Without her Dad's knowledge and
experience nad her Mom's support, none of this would have been possible.
Earl and Kasey married in 1970 and lived in St. John for one year, before
moving to Medicine Lodge, where he teaches Secondary Art. Kasey is a full
time wife and mother, part time secretary to Earl's professional art career,
and is secretary for the Gyp Hills Trail Ride Association. She is also past
President of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Kasey and Earl coordinated and
advertised the first professional Western Art Show held during the 1976 Peace
Treaty. Earl was instrumental in developing the logo on the cover of this
book. Earl's paintings have been featured on several Western and Horse
magazine covers. Earl has shown in Fort Robinson, Nebraska, Houston, Texas,
Littleton and Denver, Colorado, Pratt, and will show in Oklahoma City this
summer. Earl and Kasey are also directors of Marriage Preparation Program
working with young couples preparing for marriage.
Three sons blessed this union: Kelly Paul, 1971, Kory Tye, 1974, and Kerry
Lee, 1975. The boys love riding the family's horses, the country life, and
all the animals around them. An exciting day for them is when they ride in
Grandpa's buggy. They hope to learn to drive it and learn to harness the team
to carry on their great heritage.
