Wendell Lake
In 1891, following the death of his mother in Erie, Kansas, Fred Lake
came with his father to visit his uncle and aunt, Rueben and Mary Lake.
He remained with them and grew up with his cousins, Riely and Irene (Pin)
Lake.
Upon graduation from Southwestern Academy in Winfield, Kansas, Fred
attended Baker University in Baldwin, Kansas, and received a business
degree. He worked for a short time for Rorabaugh's Store in Wichita,
Kansas.
He returned to Lake City and along with a partner, opened a drug store.
This store burned and in 1905 Fred established a hardware store, which,
with his appointment as Postmaster, remained his business until his death
in February of 1958.
Fred married Rosa Kanier on December 18, 1907. My two brothers, Virgil
and Loren, and I were all born in Lake City and lived there until leaving
home to attend college.
I, Wendell P. Lake, upon graduation from Southwestern College in 1937,
Winfield, Kansas, took a Chemist's position with Derby Refining Company,
where, with subsequent promotions, I have served for 42 years. I am
currently Administrator of Marketing and Refinery Services. I will retire
September 1, 1979.
While in college, I met Lucille Gilbert and we were married June 25, 1937.
We are the parents of three children, Marcia McFarland of Wichita, Kansas,

We are proud of their accomplishments.
