Gordon C. Land
The Gordon C. Land family is relatively a newcomer to Barber County,
having moved to Kiowa in August 1974.
Born on her parents' wedding anniversary, August 26, 1952, Vickey
Arlene was the 25th baby born in the Kiowa District Hospital. She is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil L. Vannaman, also residents of Kiowa and
Barber County.
When Vicky was 16 years old, she contracted infectious hepatitis and
was confined in isolation for 76 days in the Kiowa District Hospital. She
graduated from the Kiowa High School in 1970. After graduation, Vickey
entered Kansas State Teachers College at Emporia, Kansas, and graduated in
July, 1974 with a Bachelors degree in business.
Gordon Craig Land was born and raised in Kickapoo, Kansas in Leavenworth
County. He and Vicky were married in July, 1974 and lived in Leavenworth,
Kansas, for one month prior to miving to Kiowa. To that marriage two daughters
were born: Sara Levi, August, 1976, and Luci Arlena, August, 1978.
Upon moving to Kiowa, Gordon took a position with Humphrey IMplement and
Hardware as a truck driver, but later took a position in the mechanic shop. He
also worked part-time for the City of Kiowa on the Kiowa Police Department,
having had experience as a guard for the Kansas State Penitentiary at Lansing,
Kansas.
Vicky worked as a billing clerk for Coontz Implement and Manufacturing, Inc.
until Sarah's birth. A year and half later she took the position of bookkeeper
for Shoshon implement of Kiowa, while in the meantime working on a part-time
basis at Kiowa Clinic as receptionist. In 1977 Vicky joined the Estudie Junior
Federated Club, a member of the General Federation of Women's Clubs. She was
elected treasurer for the 1979-1980 year.
Vicky rekindled former friendships upon returning to Kiowa, and together
the Land family formed many new ones.
