Wilford R. Lane
James B. Lane and his wife, Bertha, with their sons Laurence and Wilford,
came to barber County, February 1910, from Daviess County, Missouri.
Their first home was in Kiowa where they lived about three months, they
then purchased and made their home a farm three miles northeast of Kiowa,
on which we continue to live at the present time.
I attended rural grade school at Fairview School, which was about two
city blocks from our home. A number of the teachers made their home with
us during the school term as it was close to the school.
Our family did quite a lot of farm business and trading at Hazelton, for
it was quite a thriving community at that time. Hazelton was what they called
a "Saturday night town", the stores and business places remained open and
folks came to do their trading and visit. There was also a roller skating
rink above one of the stores; it drew a number of people.
I completed my schooling at Kiowa High School in 1925, after which I
continued to farm in the area.
I (Wilford) and Neota Reed were married in 1935 and made our home four
miles northwest of Hazelton.
I received my amateur radio license in 1938 and commercial radio license
in 1949, after which I did installation and service work for Motorola
Communications Company.
I accepted a position with the Federal Aviation Agency as an electronics
technician in 1960. I completed 13 years of Federal Civil Service, three
years of which were at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico; I retired
from civil service in 1973.
Our son James Kent was born in 1947 at Hardtner; he attended school in
Kiowa, graduating from high school in 1964. After high school graduation,
Kent continued his education at Oklahoma State University. Kent and Cheryl
Paine, of Oklahoma City, were married while in school at Oklahoma State.
Kent received a degree in forestry and Cheryl, a degree in journalism.
After completing two years in the U.S. Army, Kent accepted employment
with the Federal Forest Service, near Little Rock, Arkansas; at the present
time he is transferring to an area near Atlanta, Georgia.
Since our retirement we have enjoyed our two grandchildren, Derek and
Elissa Lane; they, along with our hobbies and traveling around in our
trailer, use up most of our time.
My wife Neota's father and mother both lived an early part of their lives
in Barber County. Her father, when two years of age, came to the Elm Mills
area from New Jersey; her mother lived on a farm west of Hardtner, Kansas.
Having lived a lifetime in Barber County, we have formed a number of
friendships we will always remember.
