William Laverentz

William Laverentz and Anna Laverentz were married in 1911 at her parents
home, now the James Bell residence. After marriage they moved on a farm
4 1/2 miles south of Isabel, there they raised six children: Marvin, Roy,
Earl, Fern, Dale and Thelma. All attended the country school of Eldred.
They always walked to and from school and took their lunch. They liked
to swap their homemade bread sandwiches for baker's bread sandwiches,
     which were a treat.
In 1932 they moved two miles northwest of where they lived to a new
home which was built when wheat was 25 cents a bushel. Soon all the
children were married and gone; Marvin, to Mildred Ellis of Isabel; Roy,
to Ruby McKay of Isabel; Earl, to Ruth Hoyer and Dale, to Marie Hoyer
(Ruth's sister); Fern, to Martin Lampe and Tehlma, to Wilbert Westerman,
all of Nashville. They have 14 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and
1 great great grandchild. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary
in 1971 and William died in 1972.
In 1947 they had retired and moved to Nashville. Dale and Marie moved
     on the farm after Dale's return from WWII. Here they raised three boys;
Kenneth, Bernard and Ricky. All attended Isabel schools and were graduated
except Ricky, who was graduated at Medicine Lodge after Isabel school
closed his freshman year. Bernard attended the American Legion Boys' State,
when a junior. All three belonged to B-Square 4-H Club. Kenneth and Ricky
attended Pratt Community College; Bernard, Fort Hays College.
Dale was an active member of American Legion and served many years on
the Elevator Board; Marie is a member of American Legion Auxiliary and
     Friendly Neighbors Club.
After Dale's death in 1968, Kenneth managed the farm. In 1970, when he
married Rebecca Ricker of Zenda, Marie and Ricky moved to Isabel. Marie
is employed at the Isabel State Bank; Ricky does custom cutting and in
the winter works at Kingman Manufacturing Company at Cunningham. Bernard
is employed at the Kansas Industrial Environmental Services, in Wichita.
Kenneth and Becky have a daughter Jennifer. Becky is a member of the
Appaloosa Club and trains and rides horses. Kenneth's sport is hunting
coyotes. They are members of and have a home at Lake Arrowhead.
Earl, Ruth and twin daughters, Joyce and Janice, moved to Isabel in
1949. Earl farmed with Dale. The girls attended Isabel school. After
graduation from Kansas State College, Joyce married Fred Nolting of
Plains. They and their two children reside in Rawlins, Wyoming. Joyce
married R.C. Dixon of Isabel and resides in Goddard. They have 3 children
and 1 grandchild. Earl and Ruth moved from Isabel in 1977, for health
reasons they quit farming several years earlier. Earl was active in
American Legion and Ruth in the Auxiliary and Friendly Neighbors Club.
They enjoy traveling and "winter" in Zapata, Texas.
Both Earl's and Dale's families enjoyed a lot of their recreation at
99 Springs, where both were members. All agree that Barber County has
been a good place to live.
