Henry Lawton
The Lawtons, Henry and Edna (Lowe) are natives of Americus, Kansas where
his father was postmaster and her carpenter farmer trimmed rough walnut
lumber for Marlow Woodcuts Inc. After college at Manhattan, Henry clerked
in the Americus post office, and took over for two years when his father's
health failed. Edna attended Friends University at Wichita, then taught
music to beginners. They were married in 1917, and settled in Emporia where
Henry was police desk-sergeant, then a bank teller; and finally moved to
Kiowa and became the Home Office Manager for the Mackey-McBrayer Lumber
Company. He was appointed postmaster at Kiowa under President Coolidge
and again under President Hoover, serving more than nine years; until
replaced by William S. Harris.
The Lawtons are Methodists. Their children are, Donald, Keith, Phyllis
and Martha. Their youngest was born in Kiowa. They have eight grand and
five great grandchildren. Henry Lawton was Master of the Masonic Lodge,
Boy Scout chairman and Charter president of the Lions Club. He and Albert
Ramsay took part in the first Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty pageant, garbed
as Jesuit Priests. Edna was a Lioness, a member of OES and was sponsor of
the Methodists Intermediate League, with eighty-one members and an average
attendance of fifty-three teenagers.
In 1934, the Chamber of Commerce, under President Roscoe Goforth, carried
out an unusual harvest festival, known as the "KI-O-Larka" (See News-Review
Record, October 11, 1934) The name was proposed and the script was written
by Henry Lawton. The event was managed by Prof. Julian Johnson. The parade
was two miles long, of which one miles consisted of sixteen rural schools,
presenting charades, before judges, for prizes. It was a gala event, very
plausible to the Chamber of Commerce, and to all who participated.
When the rural mail route at Bushong, Kansas became vacant, the postmaster
sent word to Henry Lawton, inviting his interest, and as a result, Lawton
was transferred there and served the route for twenty two years, retiring
in 1960. Edna Lawton was appointed assistant postmaster and served as such
for eighteen years. She was pianist at the church, chairman of the children's
Sunday School division and was Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star. Henry was
church Trustee, Notary Public and City Clerk for many years.
Upon retirement, the Lawtons moved to Leisure World at Seal Beach, Calif.
to be near their daughter and other relatives. They are in good health and
enjoy their retirement near the Blue Pacific.
