George Liebst
My father Fred Liebst settled in Barber County in 1883 west of Gerlane where
he worked for Capt. Rogers and others until he bought a farm just south of
Roundup school. The Wm. Rogers family moved to a farm north of the Mumford
school in 1887, coming here from north Missouri.
My mother, Birda Rogers, came to Medicine Lodge to go to school, she stayed
at the Capt. Rogers (no relation) home. While there she became acquainted with
Fred. They were soon married and settled on the farm at Roundup. They sold that
farm and bought one south and east of the Mumford school in 1895.
The Mumford postoffice was organized and Father was appointed postmaster. The
office was in one corner of the kitchen in their house. The neighbors would come
there to get their mail or mail letters. They were then hauled to Medicine Lodge.
I was born in the room next to the Postoffice in October, 1902. The office
was closed about 1906 when a rural route was laid out from Nashville to service
the north-eastern part of Barber County.
I met Mabel Whitcomb at a Christmas program in 1922 south of Freedom, Oklahoma.
I was Santa Claus and she was one of my helpers. We were married in Woodward,
Oklahoma in 1923.
We were living on the home place when our son Lewis was born in January 1925.
He was born in the same room where I was born. I think his birth night was about
the coldest of the year. The snow was about six inches deep and froze so hard we
could walk on top. Dear Doc Hayworth and his brother came out from Sharon that
night and got stuck about three fourths mile from us and had to walk the rest of
the way. Mrs. Ed Kraemer, a very dear lady, lived across the road from us and came
over to help the doctor. Her help was greatly appreciated. After daylight I
harnessed up a trusty ole horse and went with Doc and his brother to get the car
out, but that 'dam' ole horse wouldnt' even tighten a tug, so I had to go back
and get another horse; they both pulled it out ok.
After all that I told Mabel to either have her kids in warm weather or in
town. We have had five more, all girls. All but one was born in warm weather and
that one was born in town.
We have 52 grandchildren and don't really know how many great grandchildren
but last count was 17 and still counting.
Lew and wife Betty live on the old home place but have added to it greatly in
recent years. Our daughters Winnifred Phelps lives in Mesa, Arizona; Geraldine
Hedges lives in Kiowa and Marilyn Eck near Sharon. Darlene Rausch is near Topeka
and Marlene Fischer near Wichita. Mabel and I moved to Medicine Lodge in 1965.
