Frank Loewenstein

Frank (Butch) Loewenstein and Katherine Brown were married in Olpe,
Kansas on February 7, 1906. They moved to Sharon, Kansas on January 15,
1907. They opened a grocery store on Main Street, south of the black-
smith shop. Their daughter, Mary, was born there in the living quarters.
When the sidewalk was poured, my dad made an imprint of a saw, cleaver,
and knife. I think they are still there. We then moved to the house west
of where Al Pelzl's live, this was where Margaret and I, Josephine were
     born.
My dad then managed the old hotel, which stood where the drug and
grocery store are now. My mother cooked the meals for all the BORDERs
and drummers who stopped by. I remember the circus and carnival people
stayed there too. My dad was Marshal at that time. Loretta and Francis
were born while we lived at the hotel.
Dad was always interested in livestock of all kinds, so he left the
hotel and started buying, trading, and selling.
He also started the first Pastime Theater, about 1915, on the roof
of the present Hommertzheim garage. In the fall, he moved it inside a
building on Main Street. My mother sold tickets and we girls played the
player piano for silent films. Paul Whelan ran the films, or projector.
We moved to a house north of Bill Huffaker farm in 1916. Albert was
born there. We moved several times while Dad continued buying and selling
livestock. He bought 15 acres south of Main in 1922. While our new home
was being built, we lived in the DeWitt house south of town where Veronica
was born. We moved into our home in 1924. My dad continued buying and
shipping stock to Wichita and Kansas City. He also had pens for fattening
hogs. At this time, he also operated a restaurant and Butcher shop across
from the Drug Store. In early 1930, he built a sales pavilion west of his
home. Floyd Schubach was the auctioneer. Mary Margaret and I started
school in the first school where the High School now stands. When St.
Boniface was built in 1917, we all went there and graduated. I, Josephine,
Margaret and Frencis went on to high school and graduated.
In 1952, the folks sold their home to Bob Whelan and moved near St.
Boniface church. Dad passed away in 1961, and Mother in 1972. Albert
preceded them in 1952. Francis and Margaret still live in Sharon, where
Francis manages the COOP. Mary lives in Washington, and Josephine, Loretta,
     and Veronica in California.
