Norman and Grant Long
Norman and Grand were both born in the home of their grandparents,
George and Frances Cline, at Deerhead, Norman in 1917, Grant in 1919.
Their parents were Clifford and Ethel Cline Long. Ethel was born at
Deerhead and Cliff at Concord, Illinois, but moved to Barber County
as a young boy where his mother, Lucy Long, homesteaded 160 acres
near Aetna, which Norman and Grant still own.
Doris was born near Spivey in 1918, Gussie near Isabel in 1921.
Our parents were Charlie and Edna Willits Griem. We moved to Medicine
Lodge, in 1929, Norman and Grant in 1931. All attended school in
Medicine Lodge. Norman and Doris were married June 29, 1940. Norman
and Doris had four children, Jime, Grant Lewis, George and Vickie.
Vickie was the first girl born in the Long family in over 100 years.
Grant and Gussie had no children of their own.
We all did some moving in the early 40's for work, but settled in
Medicine Lodge in 1947, where Long Bros. Welding Service was opened in
February of that year. In 1950, Norman sold his interest to Grant and
it changed to Long's Welding Service. Norman went into the livestock
trucking business with Doris often going along as relief driver, which
was rare then. Women didn't drive 18 wheelers then as they do now. We
lived across the corner from each other and in Norman and Doris absence
"Uncle and Auntie" kept the children.
Norman went back to welding after the hauling business and retired,
due to an injury, in 1978. Norman and Doris sold their home on S. Oak
to Vickie and her husband, Bob McDonald, in 1978, and moved to their
present home on N. Cedar. Grant and Gussie have their home next to their
welding shop on S. Cleveland.
The family suffered the loss of Norman and Doris youngest son, George
Wendell on May 12, 1968. He was with the Air Force in Viet Nam.
The other three live near. Jim, Sherry and their family in Medicine
Lodge, Grand L., JoAnn and family in Lake City and Vickie, Bob and family
in Medicine Lodge.
We all like to travel and we have each owned travel trailers for
several years. Each couple has a boat to carry on the car top. We all
like fishing. We have friends with trailers and sometimes form quite a
group. All plan to travel in retirement, but keep our homes in Medicine
Lodge.
