Donald William Lonker
Donald William Lonker and Barbara Lewis were married July 26, 1958,
at the Presbyterian Church at Corwin, Kansas. Don is a native of Barber
County, the oldest son of Melvah and Mildred Nelson Lonker. Don had
one brother, James M., and they were raised on the family ranch south-
west of Medicine Lodge. Don graduated from Medicine Lodge High School
in 1954.
Barbara is hte oldest child of Virgie Merideth and Granville Lewis.
Granville Hoover Lewis worked for the Cities Service Gas Company and
came to this area in 1928, and assisted in building the Cities Service
Booster Station that same year. The Lewis children, Barbara, Sherrie
and Jim were all raised at this station, and Granvill and Virgiie
Lewis have lived in the Corwin community all their married lives.
Barbara graduated from Hazelton High School in 1953, and went on to
graduate from Kansas State University in 1957, with a degree in Elementary
Education. At KSU Barbara was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. Upon
graduation she taught first grade in Topeka and Manhattan.
Don graduated from KSU in 1958, with a degree in Agricultural Economics
and in 1963 with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Don was a member of
Blue Key, President of the Student Chapter of the AVMA and a member of
Beta Theta Pi social fraternity.
Don and Barbara moved to Dodge City after graduation from veterinary
school in 1963 and worked for Drs. Ripple and Liebl until February, 1966,
when he purchased the veterinary practive of Dr. Frank Fishburn in Medicine
Lodge.
There are four children in the Don Lonker family. Elizabeth Jo born
March 23, 1960 in Medicine Lodge. That year Don and Barbara lived on the
ranch, after the death of Don's father in May, 1959; Clinton Lewis was born
April 9, 1963 in Manhattan; Brenton George was born June 8, 1965 in Dodge
City; Kirk William was born September 18, 1966 and passed away September
28 at the University of Kansas Medical Center; Andrea Caroline was born
December 6, 1970 at Medicine Lodge.
The whole family enjoys their ranch in the Gyp Hills west of Medicine
Lodge, with animals of all kinds and raising Hereford cattle. The children
show heifers and steers at local fairs, Kansas State Fair, Kansas National
Junior Show, American Royal and National Western in Denver. The Lonkers
have also shown cattle at various ROM shows in the United States. The whole
family is active in the various associations of the Kansas Hereford Association.
Don is presently serving as a director and Elizabeth is an officer and director
of the KJHA. Barbara is a member of chapter DP of PEO, and Don and Barbara
are members of the United Methodist Church choir, where all the family are
members.
