Charles M. Lottridge
Charles and Jane (Harkrader) Lottridge moved to Medicine Lodge in the early
months of 1950 when Charles was transferred from Pratt, Kansas by the Kansas
Power and Light Company. Both were born and raised in Pratt and were married
there in 1948. Jane is a Kansas University graduate; Charles attended Wichita
University and spent 42 months overseas in World War II.
Barber County was not new to the Lottridges because both had enjoyed the
recreation area at Elm Mills most of their lives. This development was the
gathering place of hundreds of picnickers, swimmers and fisherman. Anyone who
went down the slide on a surfboard at the pool there knew what fun really was!
Their children, Sara Ann and Charles Mark, were born in 1953 and 1957,
respectively. Both children graduated from Medicine Lodge High School and attended
Kansas State University, Sara graduating in 1976.
In 1954, Charles along with Wendell Warren purchased from Wade Sprout the local
Ford agency. He operated this for twenty years and at present is a licensed real
estate broker.
Jane was employed by the Department of Social Welfare for a number of years and
later as a substitute teacher in the local schools.
Sara Ann is married to Gregory C. Whelan, who is employed by Gold Bond Building
Products; they are presently living in Medicine Lodge. Mark is in auto sales in
Topeka, Kansas.
When Jane and Charles arrived in Medicine Lodge, few of the streets were paved,
Highway 281 was gravel and there was no hospital. But the friendliness of the people
they met here more than compensated for any of these inconveniences.
