Dale Lukens

Dale and Marge are both lifetime residents of Barber County. Dale was the
son of George and Mable Lukens, born 1922, in a farmhouse near North Star
school, where he attended grade school. At an early age, Dale helped farm
with teams of mules and horses. Marjorie was the daughter of George and Ella
Baier, born in 1922, near Union Chapel, where she attended Elwood School.
Dale and Marge were married July 1940, in Harper, Kansas. Their first
home was on the Briggs Place. Dale worked for his dad, and drove a buggy or
rode his horse to his dad's to help farm. The first family car was bought
    the fall of 1940 - a 1928 Chevy Coupe!
In the spring of 1941, they moved to the Union Chapel community. Along
with farming, they raised pigs, horses and milked cows.
Roger was born in 1941. Marge was active in community affairs, a member
of Farm Unit, Laidies Aid (served as president), a farm sales, socials,
church board, and was 4-H Leader for ten years.
Dale served on the school board, was director of the Roping Club when it
was organized, served as president several times. Both Marge and Dale were
in the first Peace Treaty Pageant, and Dale has been active in the organization
    since.
September, 1948 a daughter, Kaye, was born.
Roger won outstanding achievements in 4-H Land and Livestock Judging; was
Valedictorian of Rural Grade School, and of his Senior Class of 1959. Roger
graduated Cum Laude of the 1966 class in KSU School of Veterinary Medicine.
In 1962, he married Patricia Wood. In 1969 Roger began teaching at Colby
Community College setting up the Animal Health Technology program. In 1975,
Roger accepted a position at Purdue University, LaFayette, Indiana where he
became Assistant to the Dean of Veterinary Medicine and director of Veterinary
Technology program. He is editor of "The Indiana Veterinary Technician."
Roger and Pat have four children: Natalie, Derek, Melissa and Alan.
Kaye was a member of Lone Eagle 4-H, and did well in Livestock, Land and
Home Economics Judgings. In 1963, Kaye was Barber County 4-H Cherry Pie
Champion. She was a member of the First Show Choir. Kaye attended Emporia
State and Fort Hays State, before her marriage to Earl Kuhn. They have three
sons, Kelly, Kory, and Kerry. Kaye won many saddles and trophies in Little
    Britches Rodeos.
In 1962, Dale and Marge moved to the Boggs Ranch, then in 1967 they moved
    to Medicine Lodge.
Kaye and Dale began showing Registered Paint Horses in 1964. Competition
was not new to Dale, as he roped calves in rodeos in the late forties, and
also rode cutting horses in the early fifties. Dale is a lifetime member of
the American Paint Horse Association, and has won many trophies and nationwide
recognition with raising Paint horses. In 1947, Dale bought a Paint mare for
Roger - (Kaye and later Roger's three childen learned to ride on her). She
became the "Grandma" of all the Paint Stock Dale raised. In 1965, Dale bought
a registered Paint stallion, Leo San Man, who sired the winners of numerous
National awards. Snowball and her foal, Snowflake, both have been and are
Leading Dam in the Nation, judged by points won by their produce. Dale has
always been and will be a true lover of horses, and has passed this love
down to his children and grandchildren.
