George Vernon Lytle
The Lytle and Williams families both lived in the Union Chapel
community. George was born in Salina, Kansas, but grew up and attended
schools in Barber County. Lola was born on the farm her parents home-
steaded. They met at the home of Bud and Eva Hall where church services
and school sessions were held.
They were married March 12, 1911. They lived in many places in and
around Medicine lOdge but probably the longest period of time was spent
at the farm west of Union Chapel. George was a farmer and dairyman. He
also served as a rural mail carrier for a number of years. During an
illness when George could not deliver the mail, Lola took over for him.
Even after he recovered she continued to help out when the weather was
good. This route covered eighty miles.
Seven daughters and one son were born to them, all surviing to adult-
hood. They are Ruby Mae (Mrs. Frost Hollar), Nettie Fay (Mrs. Walter
Conaway), Vera Alta (Mrs. Orin Roots), Thelma Jane (Mrs. Alfred Dooley),
Wand Lee (Mrs. Marion Conaway), Gretta Marie (Mrs. Virgil Dotts), Betty
Violet (Long), and John Vernon.
George left the county in the 1940's with Lola and the younger children
for a business venture in Garden City, Kansas. There they operated a
motel-service station. Later they moved farther away to a ranch between
Tabernash and Frazier, Colorado. Because of George's poor health, they
returned to Barber County to consult a doctor. He was hospitalized at
Hardtner a short time and died April 12, 1948.
Lola's life has been a busy one. She has lived with different ones of
her children through the years, helping care for her grandchildren.
Several years were spent in Alaska where both Wanda and Thelma have
made their homes. She has always been a fine cook and can bake the
lightest rolls imaginable! She has mastered all kinds of needlework.
The Assembly of God church has been a big part of her life and she
has been a member for many years.
Lola is presently living with her son, Vernon, and his wife, Mary
Jean, in Durango, Colorado.
